Season Stats: Wilmington’s Alyssa Velasquez

Delaware Sports Blitz will be showcasing student-athletes performances from this past season each week.

Each week we will look at different colleges from the state of Delaware and showcase their athlete’s performance in the chosen sport of the week.

This week is all about Wilmington’s softball team which will continue with senior shortstop Alyssa Velasquez.

Velasquez had a .259 batting average, .310 on-base percentage, .370 slugging percentage, two runs, seven hits, one double and one triple, four RBIs, two walks and four strikeouts in the shortened 10 game season.

On the defensive side, Velasquez had 35 catches for 17 putouts, 14 assists, four errors and a fielding percentage of .886 in the 2020 season.

The Indio, California native was among the best in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference in assists, as Velasquez placed in the 13th spot with 14.

Game Log

Wilmington Fall 3-2 To Western Oregon In Season Opener 

The Wildcats 2020 season began on March 1st when the team lost a close 3-2 game to Western Oregon.

Velasquez had two hits and RBI in the loss. On the defensive side, Velasquez had two catches for one putout and one assist.

Wildcats Lose In High Scoring Game Vs #4 Rollins

Wilmington kept pace with the nationally ranked #4 Rollins for most of the game but the Tars would push ahead in the ninth to get an 8-7 win.

Velasquez had one run, two hits, one triple, and two RBIs in the loss. On the defensive side, Velasquez had five catches for four putouts and one assist.

WilmU Gets Swept By #4 Rollins

WilmU had an early lead in this game but Rollins would mount a late-game come back to take a 6-5 win on March 2nd.

Velasquez had one run, one hit, one double, and one walk in the game. On the defensive side, Velasquez had four catches for one putout and two assists and one error.

Wilmington Falls To Tampa 6-3

On March 3rd, Wilmington would fall 6-3 to Tampa.

On the defensive side, Velasquez had four catches for three putouts and one assist.

Wildcats Lose 11-0 To #15 Saint Leo

On March 4th, the Wildcats were hung with an ugly 11-0 loss against #15 Saint Leo.

On the defensive side, Velasquez had five catches for two putouts, two assists, and one error.

Wilmington Loses A Tough One To #15 Saint Leo

In the second game of the doubleheader against #15 Saint Leo, the Wildcats could not find any consistency on the bases to get runs on the board which led to a 2-0 loss.

On the defensive side, Velasquez had four catches for four assists.

Wilmington Get Swept By Florida Tech

The last game of the season came on March 6th where Wilmington was leading in this game early but Flordia Tech would score a combined four runs in the eighth and ninth innings to win 5-4.

Velasquez had one RBI and one walk in the final game of the season. On the defensive side, Velasquez had three catches for two putouts and one assist.
