Goldey-Beacom Moving On To CACC Semifinals As Taite Scores 40 In 86-78 Win Vs Caldwell

The Goldey-Beacom men’s basketball team is moving on to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Semifinals as the team beat the Caldwell University Cougars 86-78 on Tuesday at the Joseph West Jones Center.

In their regular season meeting, The Lightning also took the win against the Cougars with an 85-58 win on January 12th. Marcellus Livingston was the leading scorer in the game with 19 points.

In this CACC quarterfinal game, the leading scorer for Goldey-Beacom was senior guard Corey Taite who matched his career high in points with 40. Taite is also on fire from the free throw line as he has hit 45 shots in a row from the line.

Two other Lightning players scored in double-digits and they were senior guard Troy Stancil (12) and sophomore forward Tevin Service (12).

Goldey-Beacom had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included Points off Turnovers (23-17), Assists (16-14) and Steals (9-6).

The Lightning also won the turnover battle in the game by 17-18.

Goldey-Beacom also had the advantage from the three-point line as the team shot 44.4 % (12-27) and Caldwell shot 36.4 % (8-22). The Lightning also bested the Cougars at the foul line as the team shot 91.7 % (22-24) and Caldwell shot 61.5 % (16-26).

Taite & Stancil Combine For 26 Points To Give Lightning First-Half Lead

The leading scorer for Goldey-Beacom in the first half was Corey Taite who scored 14 points. Taite’s teammate, Troy Stancil was right behind him as he scored 12 points in the first half.

As a team, the Lightning shot 43.3 % (13-30) in the first half and they also shot 83.3 % (5-6) from the foul line.

The Cougars shot 50.0 % (13-26) in the first half and they also shot 57.1 % (4-7) from the foul line.

Goldey-Beacom won the turnover battle in the first half by 7-10.

The action in the first half was a battle between the two teams and the lead would not stay with one team very long.

It was not until the 1:58 minute mark, that the Lightning put some breathing room between the two teams and went on a 10-5 run to take a 38-33 lead into halftime. Corey Taite would hit three foul shots at the end of the 10-5 run.

Goldey-Beacom shot 43.3 % (13-30) in the first half and Caldwell shot 50.0 % (13-26).

The Lightning shot 83.3 % (5-6) at the free throw line and the Cougars shot 57.1 % (4-7).

The leading scorer for Goldey-Beacom in the first half was Corey Taite with 14 points.

The leading scorer for  Caldwell  in the first half was AJ Kittles with 10 points.

Taite Scores 26 Points And Seals The Lightning’s Future To The Semifinals

The leading scorer in the second half for the Lightning was Corey Taite who scored 26 points. As a team, Goldey-Beacom found their shots in the second half as they shot 52.0 %  (13-25). The Lightning also shot 50% (5-10) from three-point line in the second half. A key factor for Goldey-Beacom in the second half was their free throw shooting, as the team shot 94.4 % (17-18).

Caldwell’s shooting dipped some in the second half as the team shot 48.3 % (14-29).  The Cougars also shot 63.2 % (12-19) at the foul line in the second half.

At the 16:39 minute mark, the Lightning went on a 10-6 run which increased their lead to 54-44 with 13:38 left in the game.

Goldey-Beacom went on another run at the 11:42 minute mark, which was a 12-3 run and the team hit four three-pointers in a row to increase their lead to 61-56 with 9:42 left in the game. Taite led the charge on the run with scoring nine of the 12 points on the run.

The Lightning would hit three free throw shots to seal their 86-78 win and their place in the semifinals.

Goldey-Beacom will travel to Caldwell, New Jersey to take on Bloomfield on March 9th at 12 PM ET in the CACC Semifinals.
