The University of Delaware men’s basketball team has now won two straight games with their double overtime 78-71 win over Towson University Tigers on Thursday at the SECU Arena.
The Tigers showed a lot grit in this game as the team was down 63-56 with 34 seconds left in the game but Towson went on 8-2 run in the remaining seconds to send the game into the overtime with a score tied at 64.
The leading scorer for the Blue Hens in the game was sophomore guard Ryan Allen who scored a career high 30 points. Allen was also clutch in the overtime period as his two free throws at the end of the first overtime sent the game into double overtime.
The Blue Hens would outscore Towson 11-4 in double overtime to take the hard fought win.
Redshirt senior forward Eric Carter and freshman guard Ithiel Horton were also clutch in the overtime periods as Carter scored four points and Horton scored five in the double overtime.
Carter also ended the game with 16 points and Horton ended with 15.
Delaware had the one statistical advantage in the game which was in Assists ( 14-6).
Allen Scores 12 Points To Give Blue Hens Halftime Lead
The leading scorer for the Blue Hens in the first half was Ryan Allen who scored 12 points. In the first half, Allen hit four out of his eight shot attempts and also hit four out of his six three point attempts.
As a team, Delaware shot 41.7 % ( 10-24) in the first half and they also shot 64.3% (9-14) at the three point line.
Towson shot 30.8 % ( 8-26) in the first half and they also shot 87.5 % (7-8) at the free throw line.
Towson won the turnover battle in the first half by 5-7.
The game started with Towson going on a 9-3 run but their lead did not last long as Delaware tied the game with back to back three pointers.
The two CAA foes battled for most of the first half as the lead went back and forth constantly.
The Blue Hens did go on a 8-0 around the 8:23 minute mark in the first half to take a 24-17 lead with 5:55 left in the half. Allen led the charge on that run scoring six out of the eight points in the run.
The Hens went on an another run with 2:59 left in the half which was a 9-3 run and increased their lead to 33-24.
At halftime, the Hens would have a 33-26 lead over the Tigers.
First Half Stats
Blue Hens were shooting 41.7 % ( 10-24) in the first half and Towson was shooting 30.8 % ( 8-26) .
Delaware was shooting 64.3% (9-14) from downtown and the Tigers 33.3 %(3-9) .
Blue Hens leading scorer in the first half was Ryan Allen who scored 12 points.
Towson leading scorer in the first half was Brian Fobbs who scored 12 points.
Delaware Struggles and Towson Makes Late Comeback In 2nd Half to Send Game Into OT
The leading scorer for the Blue Hens in the second half was once again, Ryan Allen who scored 13 points.
As a team, Delaware struggled in the second half to find good shots as they shot 32.1 % (9-28). The Hens did shoot 66.7 % (10-15) at the foul line in the second half.
The Tigers improved their shooting in the second half as the team shot 40.0 % (14-35) and they also shot 85.7 % (6-7) at the foul line.
Towson out rebounded the Hens 25-17 in the second half.
The second half started with the Tigers going on a 9-5 run which decreased the Blue Hens lead to 38-35 with 16:55 left in the game.
Then, about a couple minutes later, Towson went on another run which this time it was a 11-0 to give the Tigers a 46-42 lead with 12:24 left in the half.
Ryan Allen would hit back to back lay ups to get the Blue Hens back even with the Tigers at 46 with 10:24 left in the game.
The Hens went on a 12-5 around the 6:29 minute mark to give them a 61-54 lead with 45 seconds left in the game.
Towson was down 63-56 with 34 seconds left but the mighty Tigers went on a 8-2 run to tie the game at 64 and push it to overtime.
Hens Allen Hits Critical Foul Shots To Send The Game To Double OT
Ryan Allen hit three foul shots in the first overtime period but the most critical ones were the two with 40 seconds left in the period which Allen drowned them both to send the game to double overtime.
Hens Outscore Towson 11-4 in Double OT to Seal A Win
The Blue Hens would outscore the Tigers 11-4 in double overtime to get the tough road 78-71 win.
The Blue Hens hit six free throws in double overtime to seal the win.
The Blue Hens make to look it three straight wins as they stay on the road to take on James Madison University on February 16th at 8:00pm ET.
