Blue Hens Snap Three Game Losing Streak In 69-45 Win Vs Gardner-Webb

University of Delaware women’s basketball team snapped their three game losing streak on Tuesday by taking care of business at the Bob Carpenter Center with a 69-45 win against Gardner-Webb.

The win also marks the first home win of the season for the Blue Hens.

Blue Hens junior Bailey Kargo led all players with 20 points scored in the win. Redshirt senior Alison Lewis also joined Kargo in scoring in double digits with 17 points.

Another impressive stat from the Hens came from graduate student Makeda Nicholas who nabbed a season high of 11 rebounds in the win. Nicholas also had three blocks in the game.

Junior Rebecca Lawrence  also joined in the block party as she had a career high of five block shots in the win against Gardener-Webb.

The Hens dominated in the first half of the game as the team had a 38-19 lead at the end of the half.

The Blue Hens were near perfect when shooting three pointers as the team had a 87.5 % in the game.

 

Late First Period Kargo & Hens  Start Rolling:

In most of the first period, it was a close game with the two teams battling back and forth for the lead.

Then with about 3:28 left in the period, the Hens took control of the game with Bailey Kargo hitting back to back shots ( three pointer and jump shot) to put her team up 10-9.  Kargo was not done yet as she hit another three pointer with 2:31 left in the first period to increase the Hens lead to 4.

Alison Lewis wanted to get in on the scoring and hit a jump shot with 1:36 left in the first to increase the Hens lead to 15-9.

Gardner-Webb ended the  6-0 run that Delaware was on when Savannah Plentovich hit a jumper to decrease the Hens lead to 15-11.

To end the first period the Hens had a three point shot from  junior Abby Gonzales and a lay up go in from Makeda Nicholas. Those scores gave the Hens a 20-11 lead heading into the 2nd period.

 

Hens Continue To Dominate in The Second Period:

The second period started with how the first period ended with the Hens on a roll because the team started the period with a 7-0  run which gave the Hens a 27-11 lead.

In the 7-0 run, the Hens were led by Rebecca Lawrence who had a steal, block and three points in the run.

The Hens would end the first half with a 38-19 lead over Gardner-Webb.

 

First Half Stats

The Blue Hens shot 8 for 13 in the first half and Gardner-Webb shot 5 for 14.

The Hens were 3 for 3 with three pointers and Gardner-Webb was 1 for 4.

 

Hens Defense Stays Strong In Second Half:

In the first four minutes of the second half, neither team could score as the defense took over the game.

Blue Hens as a team had two steals, a block and three defensive rebounds in the early minutes of the third period.

Gardner-Webb went on 8-0 run in the third period at 4:24 mark where Neydja PetitHomme started it off with a layup. The 8-0 run decreased Delaware’s lead to 44-27.

The Hens would outscore Gardner-Webb the rest of the third period as they would take a 51-31 lead into the fourth period.

The Blue Hens defense held Gardner-Webb offense in check in the fourth as the Hens added 18 points in the fourth to win 69-45 at home.

Blue Hens continue their home stand on Thursday when they take on University of Maryland at 3:00pm ET.
