Blue Hens Beat In State Rivals Delaware State 64-49

The Delaware Blue Hens took care of their in state rival the Delaware State Hornets 64-49 on Friday at the Bob Carpenter Center. Delaware’s collecting on the boards really helped them dominate the Hornets by out rebounding Delaware State by 20.

This is Delaware’s second straight win of the season and they are 3-0 at home for the second straight year. The Hens now are 5-3 on the year and lead this series by a record 13-4.

It all started in the first half, where the Blue Hens got off to a hot start with a quick 6-0 lead.  Hens hit the boards heavy in the run with 6 rebounds to help them get off to a quick start. After that quick run, the first half was pretty close with Delaware State always managing to find a way back to a single digit gap in the lead. At halftime the Hens were leading 31-28.

Delaware’s leading scorer for the first half was Chivarsky Corbett who scored 12 points. Corbett was also on fire from the three point line in the first half, making 4 of 5 at the three point line.

Delaware head coach Martin Ingelsby, talked about how the presence of the boards changed the game for Delaware:

“I’m really proud of our guys,” said Delaware first-year head coach Martin Ingelsby. “We talked the last couple days that our defensive presence is something we have to hang our hat on – I always put on the board defend and rebound – and we outrebounded them by 20 rebounds and did a terrific job guarding the three-point line.”

Hornets leading scorers were DeVaughn Mallory and DeAndre Haywood who both had 8 points in the first half.

In the early second half it looked like it would remain a tight game but Delaware soon change that. Before going on a big run that would change the game, The Hens at the 16:13 mark lost the lead for the first time in the game with the score 36-35.

The Hens took control over the game after that and outscored the Hornets 30 to 9 to seal the deal and win the game 64-49.

The top scorer for Delaware in this game was the hot three point guy, Chivarsky Corbett who had 16 points.

Coach Ingelsby had a lot good to say about Corbett and his recent offensive development:

“They had some guys who were up there in the country in three-point percentage, so we wanted to limit shots from the perimeter and make them make enough two-point shots to beat us,” said Ingelsby. “And I love what our group has done on the defensive backboards. When this group can lock in and defend, we’ve got a chance to win every night. Chivarsky was excited to play against zone, he’s a guy who is finding his rhythm on the offensive end in this system. I’ve been really impressed with his ability to make shots. When he’s making shots from the outside, it opens up some driving areas for other guys.”

Hornets top scorer was DeAndre Haywood  who had 15 points in the game.

On one interesting note, this the seventh time this season the Blue Hens out rebounded their opponent this season.

Hens next opponent is  Yale University which will be on Sunday, December the 11th.
