The Delaware Blue Hens opened up the Tarkett Sports classic tournament in dramatic fashion by taking a 68-66 win over Miami (Ohio) Redhawks with a Chivarsky Corbett’s three pointer with 5.2 seconds left to seal the game.
In the first half at Miami (Ohio)’s Millett Hall, Miami had no answer for the Blue Hens who had taken the lead at 16:13 mark and never let go of it until late second half of the game.
Guard Darian Bryant led the Blue Hens in points in the first half with 9 and he ended with 16 on the night.
Hens shot 48 FG% compared to the Redhawks 35.7 FG % in the first half and Delaware was greatly helped by their free throws in the first half which they were 6 for 8.
In the second half the Redhawks led by guard Michael Weathers who led all scorers with 24 points went on a tear that led the Redhawks to tie the game up at 64 points apiece with 14 seconds left in the game.
Then came the dramatics, with the game tied Hens Chivarsky Corbett pulled up for what would be the game sealing three with 5.2 seconds left. Then Redhawks were not going away quietly with making it a 2 point game with 3 seconds left thanks to two made free throw shots. Then Miami fouled Corbett who made one of his two free throw shots to end the game with a 68-66 win.
Blue Hens coach Martin Ingelsby said this about the MVP of the night Chrivarsky Corbett:
“What a day for Chivarsky Corbett. He hadn’t gotten off to the best start this season, but he stepped up and hit some really big shots tonight, and obviously the biggest one to win it at the end. Now we’ve got to get some rest and be ready to go tomorrow afternoon.”
This is the first ever meeting between the Blue Hens and Redhawks and it sure was an exciting one to watch.
Delaware goes to 3-1 which makes their best starting record since the 2003-2004 team went 5-1.
Delaware has no time to bask in this win because they play Northern Kentucky tomorrow at 1:30 pm ET for the second day of the Tarkett Sports classic.
