The Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team earned its eighth win of the season on New Year’s Eve with a dominating 105-88 victory over the Franklin Pierce University Ravens.
Junior forward Julian Williams and Sophomore guard Brian Blanchet led the team in scoring with 18 points. Williams also recorded a double-double in the win, collecting ten rebounds.
Three other Goldey-Beacom players who scored in double digits in the win were Sophomore guard Tre Powell (17), Junior guard/forward Emarquis Jones, (14), and Senior guard Justin Allen (14).
The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (46-42), points off of turnovers (28-14), fast-break points (25-7), assists (20-11), turnovers (14-17), blocks (6-5), and steals (12-10).
Goldey-Beacom also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 52.9% (37-70) and Franklin Pierce shooting 40.3% (29-72). GBC also outshot the Ravens from the three-point line, with the team shooting 38.7%(12-31) and Franklin Pierce shooting 22.6% %(7-31). The Lightning also outshot the Ravens from the free-throw line, with the team shooting 86.4%(19-22) and Franklin Pierce shooting 67.6%%(23-34).

The Lightning struck fast in this matchup, as they jumped out to a 14-3 edge with 16:12 remaining in the opening half. Tre Powell led the charge, scoring six of the 14 points during this time.
In the next six minutes and 12 seconds, Franklin Pierce fought back by outscoring GBC 17-7 to pull the deficit to one point (21-20) with 9:58 left in the first half. Emmanuel Ferreras and Beni Lavodrama had the hot hand during this stretch, scoring nine of the 17 points.
Fast forward to the 3:55 mark, where Julian Williams would make a layup to give Goldey-Beacom a 36-31 advantage.
Brian Blanchet and Junior guard Jalen Robinson made sure Goldey held on to the lead in the final minutes of the first half by scoring six of the team’s eight points during that stretch to put the score at 44-39.

GBC started off the second half hot as they dashed off on an 11-0 run to expand their edge to 55-39 with 17:45 left in the game. Tre Powell, Emarquis Jones, and Julian Williams caused problems for the Ravens’ defenders by scoring all 11 points during that time. The team drained four of their five shots during this stretch.
Four minutes and nine seconds later, Sophomore guard Anthony Akande nailed a three-pointer to push the Lightning’s lead to 71-51.
Around the five-minute mark, Williams gave Goldey a 22-point advantage (92-70) by making a layup and then draining a free-throw shot.
The Lightning would outscore Franklin Pierce 18-13 for the rest of the game to seal a 105-88 win. Freshman guard Jermai Stewart-Herring came up strong during that time, scoring eight of the 18 points.
