Zayon Marsh registers a double-double in Goldey-Beacom’s 87-84 win over Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom would trail by four points at the end of the first half.

The game started with Caldwell jumping out to a quick 5-2 advantage with 17:55 left in the opening half. Darnell Evans was a big reason for the Cougars’ run, as he made three free throws during this time.

In the next three minutes and 28 seconds, the Lightning would strike back by going on a 9-2 run to grab an 11-7 lead with 14:27 remaining in the first half. Junior guard Mekhi Collins score five of Goldey’s nine points during that time.

Twenty-six seconds later, Caldwell would respond by outscoring the Lightning 15-9 to take a 22-20 advantage with 8:48 left in the opening half. The Cougars’ defense definitely helped during this run, as they had two blocks, two steals, and four defensive rebounds.

Starting at the 4:12 minute mark, Goldey-Beacom would score five unanswered points to give the team a 31-27 edge with 3:35 remaining on the clock in the first half. Ayshion Centeno scored all five points during that run.

Right after the Lightning’s run, the Cougars would start their own, as they outscored Goldey 11-0 to take a 38-31 lead with 1:06 left in the opening half.

In the last seconds of the first half, sophomore Cardin Joubert would make a layup and got a free throw to go in, which would cut Goldey’s deficit to four points (38-34).

The Lightning wins 87-84!

Goldey-Beacom would be on fire in the early minutes of the second half, as the team scored 14 straight points to give them a 48-38 advantage with 14:33 left in the game. Rebounding played a key part in the run, as the team collected ten rebounds. The Lightning’s defense was also solid during this time, as they had three steals and one block.

Thirty-two seconds later, Caldwell would come storming back, as the team went on an 18-6 run to grab a 56-54 lead with 10:37 remaining in the second half.

Fast forward to the 4:11 minute mark, where Ayshion Centeno would get a layup to go in to help Goldey hold a slim five-point edge (70-65).

Two minutes and 78 seconds later, the Lightning would bump their lead to seven points (77-70) with Tyshon Judge draining a free-throw.

Starting at the 1:25 minute mark, the Cougars would strike back with a 13-7 run, which would slice GBC’s advantage to one point (84-83) with seven seconds left in the game.

As the seconds drained from the clock, the Lightning would make three free throw shots to seal an 87-84 victory over Caldwell.
