Five Wilmington University players score in double-digits in an 86-80 win over the District of Columbia

Wilmington University would lead by 11 points at the end of the first half.

The game started with Wildcats blazing off to a 6-2 advantage with 18:11 left in the opening half. Sophomore guard Jordan Jackson and Justin Thomas drained a three-point shot on this run.

Starting at the 17:17 minute mark, the District of Columbia would come firing back as they scored seven straight points to take a 7-6 lead with 16:30 remaining in the first half.

In the next eight minutes and five seconds, Wilmington would outscore the Firebirds 19-10 to have a 25-17 edge with 8:06 left in the opening half. Nalik Veasley and Caleb Matthews would score 11 of the team’s 19 points during this time. WilmU would make four shots from the three-point line in this run.

Seconds later, UDC would score four unanswered points to close the lead to 25-21 with 7:38 remaining in the first half of the game.

Twenty-eight seconds later, the Wildcats would explode as the team would score 14 straight points to push their advantage to 39-21 with 4:27 left in the opening half of the game. Amiri Stewart and Veasley would score eight of Wilmington’s 14 points during this time.

Starting at the 3:50 minute mark, UDC would begin to surge as they went on an 11-4 run to trim the lead to 43-32 at the end of the first half.

Wilmington’s defense did its part for most of the opening half, as they collected 15 defensive rebounds, six steals, and six blocks.

WilmU would win 86-80!

The Firebirds would continue to build on their momentum from the late minutes of the first half by outscoring the Wildcats 7-2 in the early action of the second to cut the lead to six points (45-39) with 17:35 left in the game.

Fast forward to the 8:54 minute mark, where Amiri Stewart gave the basket a good jolt, as he scored on a slam dunk to put Wilmington up by 16 points (67-51).

Six minutes and 97 seconds later, the District of Columbia would claw back into this game as the team sliced the lead to five points (78-73) with 1:57 remaining in the second half.

WilmU would add eight more points to their score in the second half to seal a narrow 86-80 victory over UDC.
