Justin Thomas scores 19 as Wilmington University hangs on to win 70-68 over Chestnut Hill

Wilmington University would lead by 15 points at the end of the first half.

The game started with the Wildcats springing to a quick 8-3 advantage with 17:24 left in the opening half. WilmU hit two shots from the three-point line on that run, which came from Justin Thomas and sophomore guard Amiri Stewart.

Starting at the 16:45 minute mark, Wilmington University would continue to knock shots down with ease, as the team went on a 14-5 run to push their lead to 22-8 with 9:42 remaining in the first half. Thomas would score nine of the Wildcats’ 14 points during that time.

Fast forward to the 2:30 minute mark, where Wilmington was still cruising through the Griffins’ defense, as freshman guard Skip Burton drained a jump shot to put his team up by 18 points (40-22). 

The first half would end with the Wildcats leading Chestnut Hill 40-25.

WilmU would hang on to win 70-68!

The second half would start with the Griffins exploding on a 16-8 run, which would slice the lead to seven points (48-41) with 14:01 left in the game.

Chestnut Hill would continue to pressure Wilmington, with Conor Regan draining a three-pointer at the 3:11 minute mark to cut their deficit to three points (63-60).

Seconds later, the Griffins’ Noah Charles would pull the lead within one point (63-62) as he made two shots from the free throw line.

At the 2:13 minute mark, the Wildcats’ Caleb Matthews would drain a game-changing three-pointer, which expanded his team’s advantage to 66-62.

A few seconds later, Randy Rickards would add two more points to their lead (68-62) by hitting two shots from the free throw line.

The Griffins were not going away as Conor Regan would score five straight points for his team to cut the lead to one point (68-67) with ten seconds left in the game.

Wilmington would add two more points to their score as the team escaped with a 70-68 victory over Chestnut Hill.
