Justin Thomas hits a last-second shot to seal Wilmington University’s season-opening 73-71 win over Staten Island

Wilmington University would be up by three points at the end of the first half.

The game started with Staten Island flying out to a 7-3 lead with 17:19 remaining in the first half. David Shkolniy would score all seven points on the run for the Dolphins.

A minute and two seconds later, the Wildcats would claw right back into this one by outscoring Staten Island 6-3 to cut the lead to one point (10-9) with 14:35 left in the opening half. Randy Rickards would score four of Wilmington’s six points during that time.

Seconds later, the Dolphins would start on a 22-7 run, which would push their lead to 32-16 with 7:47 remaining in the first half. Staten Island drained four shots from the three-point line during this time.

WilmU would come roaring back seconds later, as the team outscored the College of State Island 21-2 to end the first half with a 37-34 advantage. Jordan Jackson would score 11 of the Wildcats’ 21 points during the run.

Thomas hits the last-second game-winning shot to seal WilmU’s 73-71 win!

The second half started with the Dolphins outscoring Wilmington 22-14 to grab a 56-51 lead with 11:14 left in the game. Staten Island continued to be hot from the three-point line as they made three during that run.

Starting at the 10:56 minute mark, the Wildcats would go on a 7-2 run to tie the game at 58 with 9:01 remaining in the second half.

Seconds later, the Dolphins would snatch the lead right back with Luis Armas draining a three-pointer to give his team a 61-58 advantage with 8:38 left in the game.

In the next seven minutes, the intensity of this matchup would step up another level as the lead changed hands three times, and the score tied twice. The last lead change during that time came when Justin Thomas hit a layup to put the Wildcats by one point (70-69) with 36 remaining in the game.

At the 25-second mark, Staten Island’s Bryce Waterman would get fouled by Wilmington’s Nalik Veasley, which would send him to the free throw line for two shots. The Dolphins forward would make both shots to put his team up by one point (71-70) with seconds remaining in the game.

It was not looking good for WilmU, but the team did not panic, as Justin Thomas would hit a jump shot with five seconds left to give his team a 72-71 advantage.

Thomas would also make a free-throw with two seconds left to seal a 73-71 win over Staten Island.
