Delaware State holds a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The theme of the first couple of minutes of this game was defense. The two teams had it twice on offense and were either forced to punt or stopped on fourth down.
On their third drive of the game, the DSU defense set their offense up well after stopping the Lions on fourth down on their own 21-yard line. The Delaware State offense capitalized on the short field as they went 17 yards in two plays to score the first touchdown in the game. Running back Wade Inge would run the ball into the endzone from the eight-yard line for the score. Inge had the hot hand on the drive as he had two carries for 17 yards.
After the first touchdown, the Hornets would cool off a bit as their next three drives resulted in a missed field goal attempt and two punts.
Starting at the 2:35 minute mark in the second quarter, DSU would begin to get their engines firing again as they went 74 yards in 11 plays to set up a made 10-yard field goal attempt to push their advantage to 10-0 at end of the first half.
One of the highlights plays on the drive was when Delaware State’s quarterback Jared Lewis found senior wide receiver Devin Curry for 16 yards to push the team to their own 42-yard line. Lincoln also helped on the drive as they were called for a personal foul penalty which would push the Hornets to the Lions’ 43 yard line.
The Hornets score another touchdown in the third quarter to push their lead to 17.
For most of the third quarter, DSU’s defense carried the team as they forced two fumbles out of Lincoln and a punt in their three drives.
Lincoln’s second fumble would set the Hornets’ offense up at the Lions 39 yard line with 6:14 remaining in the third quarter, the team did not waste any time with the short field as they scored in seven plays to take a 17-0 lead. The touchdown play came on a third and one at Lincoln’s one-yard line, where running back Thomas Bertrand-Hudon ran it in for the score.
DSU wins 34-0!
The Hornets’ first drive in the fourth quarter would result in an 84-yard, four-play touchdown drive, which pushed their lead to 24-0 with 12:36 left in the game. The touchdown came when Delaware State’s quarterback threw a 68-yard dagger to Devin Curry for the score.
After DSU’s defense forced the Lions to punt, the Hornets’ offense would set up shop at Lincoln’s 30-yard line for their next possession. The team would go 12 yards in seven plays to set up a 10-yard made field goal which would extend the score to 27-0 with 9:08 left in the game.
The last score of the game was at the 5:08 minute mark when C.J. Henry would come in at quarterback and ran 17 yards for the touchdown to seal a 34-0 victory.
