Blue Hens ride strong defensive play to upset Navy 14-7

Delaware takes a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with the help of Navy miscues.

The game would start with the Navy Midshipmen setting up their offense at their own 28-yard line. The first play for the team would be a fumble by their quarterback Tai Lavatai, which would be recovered by the Hens linebacker Drew Nickles.

Nickels fumble recovery would set up the Blue Hens at the Navy’s 21-yard line, but the Midshipmen would help bring the team closer to the endzone as they would be called for pass interference on a 15-yard throw from quarterback Nolan Henderson to wide receiver Thyrick Pitts.

University of Delaware’s offense would now sit at the six-yard line of Navy’s as Henderson would find tight end Bryce De Maille wide open for the first touchdown of the game.

The miscues would continue for Navy in the late minutes of the first quarter as in the third play of their drive, their quarterback Lavatai would cough up the ball again, which Hens linebacker Nickles would recover at the team’s 26-yard line.

At the 1:20 minute mark, it looked like Delaware would be destined to find the endzone again, but the team went on a five-play seventeen-yard drive, which ended in a missed field goal attempt at the 14:56 mark in the 2nd quarter.

Blue Hens’ defense holds strong in the second half and rides to a 14-7 win!

The next score in the game would not happen till the middle of the third quarter when the Hens went on a five-play 78-yard touchdown drive at the 4:24 minute mark. One of the key plays of the drive came when Navy was called for roughing the passer, which moved Delaware from their own 23-yard line to the 38.

Six plays later at their own 49-yard line, Blue Hens quarterback Nolan Henderson would throw a deep left pass for wide receiver Chandler Harvin for 51 yards for the score to give their team a 14-0 lead.

The Midshipmen did not waste any time responding as the team went on a ten-play 56-yard drive to cut the lead to 14-7 with 29 seconds left in the third quarter. Tai Lavatai would score the first touchdown of the game for the Navy as he ran it in from two yards from the endzone.

Delaware did not let the Navy’s score break their spirit as the team’s defense held the Midshipmen to punt or forced a turnover on downs on their last four possessions in the fourth quarter to seal a 14-7 victory.
