Wilmington is NCAA DII EAST 2 REGIONAL CHAMPS!
The scoring in this game was not right away, as the two pitchers only allowed a combined three hits in the first three innings.
Georgian Court would get the scoring started in the top of the fourth inning when Jayda Jones hit a two-out RBI double to center field, which gave her team a 1-0 lead.
Wilmington would answer back in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kiersten Comer hit an RBI single to left field, which tied the game up at one.
Fast forward two innings, and a day later, the Wildcats would push in three runs by a mix of four hits, one stolen base, and one error from Georgian Court’s defense.
The bottom of the sixth inning started with two quick outs for the WilmU hitters, but Tristyn Stewart would get the hitting chain going as she hit a single to third base. Stewart would advance two bases due to a throwing error from the Lions’ third baseman. Taylor Gillis would be the next batter up, as she hit a single to the shortstop, which allowed Stewart to score to give Wilmington a 2-1 lead.
Gillis would steal second base on the next play, and then Lexi Moore would hit a single to left field. Lauren Lopez would be the next batter up, as she hit a single to right-center field, which would send Moore and Gillis home to extend their team’s lead to 4-1.
The Wildcats starting pitcher Kylee Gunkel had been phenomenal through six innings, only giving up two hits, and one run. She was looking to finish the job in the seventh to seal the 4-1 win and send Wilmington to the Super Regionals, and Gunkel did just that as she gave up one walk, struck two batters out, and had a batter fly out.
