Wilmington trails by four runs after two innings of play
The scoring in this game started in the top of the first inning when Post would push in three runs by a mix of two hits, one walk, and two errors from the Wildcats’ defense.
The first scoring play of the top of the first inning happened when Jordan Glazer hit a two-RBI single down the right-field line, which gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Nate Miller was the next batter up, as he would reach first base by an error from Wilmington’s right fielder Quintin Ivy, but it would allow a runner to score to extend Post’s lead to 3-0.
In the next inning, the Eagles would continue to add to their lead, as Hunter Keller would hit an RBI sacrifice fly to give his team a 4-0 advantage.
Wildcats trail by one run after five innings of play
After two innings of putting zeros on the scoreboard, Wilmington would push one run in the third to cut the lead to 4-1.
WilmU’s first run of the game came when sophomore designated hitter CJ Deery hit an RBI single to left field to trim the lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Wildcats continued to cut into the lead, as the team scored two runs by a mix of one walk and three hits.
Sophomore first baseman JJ Killen would push in the first run of the fifth inning when he hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-2. Two plays later, Nic Hertzfeld would hit a single to left field, which would score Killen to trim the lead to 4-3.
WilmU takes a three-run lead after seven innings of play
The top of the sixth inning would start with WilmU’s starting pitcher Matt Warrington exiting the game after five innings of work, giving up four hits, four runs, one earned run, two walks, and five strikeouts.
Xander Emberger would come in for Warrington, as he went 0.2 innings, gave up one hit, and one run. The one run Emberger gave up in the inning happened when he had a throwing error, which allowed the Eagles’ base runner to score to expand their advantage to 5-3.
Dom Grady would relieve Emberger after the run scored, as he went 1.1 innings, gave up one hit, and earned the win.
Wilmington would answer back in the bottom of the sixth inning by pushing in four runs by a mix of three hits and two errors from the Post defense.
The first scoring play in the bottom of the sixth inning happened when Erik Grady would not only get on base from an error but would also score. Sophomore shortstop Adrian Jimenez and sophomore third baseman Shawn Haut also scored on the play to give the Wildcats 6-5 advantage. Three batters later, Nic Hertzfeld would hit an RBI double to left field to extend Wilmington’s lead to 7-5.
WilmU would add another run to their lead in the bottom of the seventh inning when Haut flew out to the center field, which allowed Hertzfeld to score to give the team an 8-5 lead.
Wilmington wins 8-6!
Fast forward to the top of the ninth inning, where Wilmington’s Alex Krick would come in to close out the win, but the Eagles did not make it easy on him as they earned a walk, reached base on an error, and scored one run. Despite all that, Krick came through in the clutch to seal an 8-6 win and clinch the CACC TITLE.
