Delaware State gets two runs on the scoreboard in the first inning
The first base runner of the game would be DSU’s Trey Paige, who found the base by earning a walk. Alan Alonso would come up to the plate next, as he hit a two-run homer to left field to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
In the bottom of the first inning, Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks would get three hits and push through one run to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Hawks’ first run of the game came when Bryan Widdowson grounded out in a double play, but it would allow Brian Cordell to score.
Hawks add three more runs in the third and fourth innings
After opening the game with a bang, the Hornets lineup would start a cold spell where the team struggled to push through runs for several innings.
Maryland Eastern Shore did not have that problem, as the team would tie the game at two runs in the third inning.
The Hawks’ tying run in the third inning came when Bryan Widdowson reached the base on a fielder’s choice, which led to an error by DSU”s Alan Alonso that gave Brian Cordell the go-ahead to go home.
UMES batters continue to light up the DSU pitching as the team added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Nick Roets would get the scoring started for the Hawks in the fourth inning as he earned a trip to first base by a bunt, which sent Kyle Cincinnati home to give their team a 3-2 lead.
A player who has already done a lot in this game would continue to remain hot, as Cordell would hit a bunt for a single, which sent Marcus Brown home to give the Hawks a 4-2 lead.
Hornets win 5-4!
Delaware State batters were quieted by the Maryland Eastern Shore’s pitching for five innings, but in the sixth inning they finally woke up.
The first base runner in the top of the sixth was Alan Alonso, who would reach first base by a walk. Alonso would follow that up by stealing second base. Sophomore first baseman Krew Bouldin would also get on base by earning a walk.
Sophomore outfielder Jordan King would be the next batter up as he would earn his place on the bases by being hit by a pitch.
The bases were loaded with one out as Alec Rodriguez stepped up to the plate, as he would fly out to the left-field, which would allow Alonso to score to trim the lead to 4-3.
As the bottom of the sixth inning started, starting pitcher Peter Carrea would walk one batter, and that would be the signal his day was done. Carrea ended the day by going five innings, giving up ten hits, four runs, three earned runs, three walks, and hitting a batter.
CJ Loper would relieve Carrea in the sixth inning, as he would stop any of the building momentum that Hawks had and would keep the score at 4-3.
DSU’s first base runner of the top of the seventh inning came when senior second baseman Miguel Rivera hit a two-out single to center field. Trey Paige would be next at the plate, as he would hit a single, which allowed Rivera to score to tie the game up at four.
The last run of the game came in the eighth inning when Rodriguez would hit an RBI single to give Delaware State a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, it would be up to pitcher CJ Loper to seal the 5-4 win for the Hornets, which he did just that as would set all three Hawks batters down in order.
