Wilmington University scores 22 runs in sweep of Chestnut Hill

Griffins score first, but Wilmington scores five runs in the second inning

The first run of this game came in the bottom of the first inning when Anastasia Watson would reach base on a fielder’s choice, which would score Madison Petroski to give Chestnut Hill a 1-0 lead.

WilmU would not score in the first inning, but it was a different story in the second as the team pushed through five runs.

In the top of the second inning, the Wilmington batters had four hits.

The scoring started for the Wildcats when Adriana Bueno would hit a double to left field, which scored Lauren Lopez to tie the game at one.

Gabbie Saucedo would be the next batter up as she flew out to the center field, which allowed Bueno to score to give Wilmington a 2-1 lead.

Four batters later, Lexi Moore would reach first base on a throwing error by the Griffins’ third baseman, which would allow Arianna Millan to score to extend their team’s lead to 3-1.

Haley Downin would step up to the plate next, as she hit a two-out double to center field, which scored Moore and Taylor Gillis to give the Wildcats a 5-1 lead in the top of the second inning.

Wildcats score four more runs in the third inning

After a scoreless bottom of the second inning for Chestnut Hill, the Wildcats lineup would remain hot as the team added four more runs in the third.

As Gabbie Saucedo stepped up to the plate, two batters were waiting to get sent home, and one of them would get their wish. Saucedo would fly out to the center field, which would allow Isabella Eleazar to score to give WilmU a 6-1 lead.

The next batter would be Megan Sterling, who would hit a single down the left-field line, which allowed Adriana Bueno to go home to extend Wilmington’s lead to 7-1.

Two batters later, Taylor Gillis would fly out to the left-field, which would allow Sterling to score to give their team an 8-1 lead.

Lexi Moore would be the next batter as she would hit an RBI single to expand’s Wilmington’s lead to 9-1.

In the bottom of the third inning, Chestnut Hill would get another run on the board, as Kayla Rolon would hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 9-2.

WilmU add four more runs in the fourth inning

Wilmington would stay on fire in the top of the fourth inning, as the team added four more runs.

Three batters later in the fourth inning, Megan Sterling would smack a double to right-center-field, which would score Adriana Bueno to give their team a 10-2 lead.

Arianna Millan would be the next batter up as she hit a two-run homer to left-center field, which gave WilmU a 12-2 lead.

Two batters later, sophomore first baseman/ pitcher Savannah Stone would single to right field, but an error by the Griffins would allow Taylor Gillis to score to give their team a 13-2 lead.

Wilmington wins 14-2!

The last run of the game would come in the top of the fifth inning, when Kylee Gunkel would hit an RBI ground out to extend the Wildcats’ lead to 14-2.

Before the bottom of the fifth inning started, Wilmington’s starting pitcher Molly Dill would exit as she went four innings, gave up four hits, two runs, and one strikeout.

Haley Downin would come in to seal the 14-2 win, which she did just that as she struck out one batter, and had the two others ground out.
