Wilmington University scores 22 runs in sweep of Chestnut Hill

Wilmington gets the scoring started in the third inning

Pitching was the story for the first two innings of this game as both pitchers dominated the opposing lineup, making it hard for them to get on base.

The story changed in the third inning, as the Wilmington batters started to wake up, and would score the first run of the game.

The action on the bases started with WilmU’s Lexi Moore hitting a single to the shortstop, which she would follow up by stealing second base.

Taylor Gillis was the next batter as she would get on base by doing a successful bunt, which advanced Moore to third base.

Tristyn Stewart would follow Gillis as she hit a single to the pitcher, which allowed Moore to go home to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

Wilmington’s starting pitcher Renamarie Rocha would continue to confuse the Chestnut Hill batters as they went silent in the bottom of the third inning.

In the top of the fourth inning, WilmU’s hitters would add two more runs to their lead.

The fourth inning would begin with Sara Miller hitting a single and then Gabbie Saucedo getting on base from getting hit by a pitch.

Three batters later, Lexi Moore would hit a single to load the bases for the Wildcats.

A batter later, Taylor Gillis would hit a two-RBI single, which gave her team a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, The Griffins would be scoreless no more, as Victoria Grillo hit an RBI single to left field to cut the lead to 3-1.

After the run scored, Rocha’s day would be done, as she went 3.1 innings, gave up three hits, one run, one earned run, two walks, and four strikeouts.

Kylee Gunkel would come in to relieve Rocha in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Wildcats win 8-1!

Chestnut’s Hill sloppy play in the top of the fifth inning would help Wilmington punch in three more runs. The Griffins had three errors in the inning, two throwing errors, and one muffed pitch.

Gabbie Saucedo would push in the first two runs of the fifth inning by reaching base on the fielder’s choice, but a throwing error would allow Sara Miller to go home, and sophomore pitcher/ second baseman Haley Downin to score to give their team a 5-1 run.

The last run of the fifth inning came when sophomore outfielder Isabella Eleazar would reach base on a throwing error from the Griffins shortstop, which allowed Saucedo to score to give Wilmington a 6-1 lead.

WilmU bats remained hot in the top of the sixth inning, as the team added two more runs to an already large lead.

Tristyn Stewart would knock in the first run of the sixth inning by hitting a double to center field, which would score Taylor Gillis to expand their team’s lead to 7-1.

Graduate student third baseman Lauren Lopez would push in the final run of the game by flying out to the right field, which would score Stewart to give Wilmington an 8-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, it would be up to Kylee Gunkel to close the door on WilmU’s 8-1 win, which she did just that as Gunkel gave up one hit, had a batter ground out, pop out, and struck out.

We looked at the first game 8-1 win. Now let’s talk about game two’s 14-1 win.
