The third and fourth innings would be big innings for DSU
In the first two innings of this game, the scoreboard would remain empty as each team’s pitcher dominated the opposing lineups.
The scoreboard would not stay quiet for long as DSU would put a run up in the third inning.
DSU’s first base runner of the third inning came when senior second baseman Miguel Rivera would earn a walk to get on first.
The next batter up would be Alan Alonso, who hit a double down the left-field, which advanced Rivera to third base.
Sophomore third baseman Trey Paige would come up to the plate next, as he flew out to the center field, but it would allow Rivera to score Delaware State’s first run of the game.
After the Eagles hitters came up empty in the bottom of the third inning, it would be the Hornets’ turn to put more runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning.
The top of the fourth inning started with Jordan King hitting a double to center field, and he would then advance to third by a fielding error from Coppin State.
Two batters later, Evan Harris would earn a walk, and then would steal second base.
DSU had two men on base with one out, when sophomore catcher Mason Brewer came to the plate as he would fly out to the left-field, but that would allow King to score to give their team a 2-0 lead.
Mike Worthington would be the next batter up as he hit a single up the middle, which would allow Harris to score to push the Hornets’ lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning.
Hornets add another run, and Coppin State scores their first in the fifth inning
Coppin State’s scoreless streak in this game would end in the fifth inning as they earned two runs. Before the Eagles finally went on the scoreboard, the Hornets would continue to add runs to their lead.
All of the base runners for Delaware State in the fifth inning, would get there by earning a walk. After Alan Alonso earned a walk, he moved to second base on a balk. Four plays later, Alonso would score DSU’s fourth run of the game on a wild pitch.
Then came the bottom of the fifth inning, where the Eagles would finally join the game by scoring some runs.
Coppin State hit two solo home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to trim the lead to 4-2.
Delaware State scored three more runs in the seventh inning
After the fifth inning, the Eagles pitching was able to silence the DSU batters in the sixth. The Delaware State hitters came back strong in the seventh inning, where they scored three more runs.
The bases would be loaded for Alec Rodriguez, who would hit a two-RBI single to expand’s the Hornets’ lead to 6-2 in the top of the seventh inning.
Two plays later, Evan Harris would hit an RBI single to give his team a 7-2 lead.
Things looked good for DSU, but Coppin State did not throw in the towel just yet, as the team would score two runs with two outs to cut the lead to 7-4.
After the two runs scored in the seventh inning, Jordan Haddaway’s day was done, as he went 6.2 innings, gave up nine hits, four runs, four earned runs, two walks, five strikeouts, hit two batters, two home runs, and earned the win.
Sophomore pitcher Peter Carrea came in to seal the win, and he did just that by getting the next batter to fly out to get DSU a 7-4 victory.
