Downin’s two RBIs helps earn Wilmington a split over Millersville in a 4-3 win

Wilmington scores two runs in the first inning

The Wildcats did not waste any time getting runs on the board in this one, as the team scored two runs in the first inning.

The inning started with Sara Miller hitting a single up the middle of the field, and after getting on base, Miller would steal second.

Taylor Gillis would be the next batter up, as she found her way on a base by an error from Millersville’s shortstop. In the next play, Gillis would steal second, and Miller would end up scoring Wilmington’s first run on an error from the Marauders catcher.

Two batters later, Lauren Lopez would hit a single and would advance to second base on the throw.

Haley Downin would step up to the plate next, as she would hit a single through the left side of the field, which would score Gillis to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.

Wildcats add another run, and Millersville scores their first run in the second inning

After the pitching shut down the Millersville’s hitters in the bottom of the first inning, the Wildcats lineup would be ready to add more runs to the board in the second.

The top of the second inning started with Tristyn Stewart bunting her way to first base, and then she followed that by stealing second base.

The next two batters for Wilmington would be Taylor Gillis and sophomore shortstop Lexi Moore, who would each get on base with a single.

Two batters later, Hayley Dowin would earn a walk with the bases load, which would score Stewart to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

Then it would be Millersville’s turn in the bottom of the second inning, the team finally woke up the scoreboard as Mia Barone hit an RBI single down the right-field line with one out to cut the lead to 3-1.

WilmU scores another run in the fourth inning

Two innings later, Wilmington would add another run to the scoreboard to push their lead to three runs.

The top of the fourth inning started with Taylor Gillis hitting a single up the middle, and then she followed that by stealing second base.

Two batters later, Lauren Lopez would fly out to the right field, but that would Gillis to score to give the Wildcats a 4-1 lead.

Wilmington hangs on to win 4-3!

The next scoring action happened in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Marauders Gabi Turner hit a solo home run to cut the lead to 4-2.

After five innings, Kylee Gunkel’s day was done, as she went five innings, gave up three hits, two runs, two earned runs, seven walks, seven strikeouts, one home run, and earned the win.

Molly Dill would come in for Gunkel in the bottom of the sixth as she gave up one hit, one run, one earned run, hit a batter, and one walk.

Four batters in, Gabi Turner would make noise for Millersville again, as she hit an RBI single to the middle of the field to trim the lead to 4-3.

Dill’s day would be over, and Renamarie Rocha would come in to try to stop Millersville’s momentum.

Rocha did just that as she went two innings, giving up one walk, and two strikeouts to seal the 4-3 win for the Wildcats.
