Delaware records 16th win of the season in thrilling 81-78 victory over Towson

Blue Hens trail by four points after one-quarter of play

The game started with Delaware jumping out to a 5-0 advantage with 7:29 left in the first quarter. Three of the five points came from the draining free throws.

Seconds later, Towson would rattle off seven straight points to take a 7-5 lead with 4:56 remaining in the first quarter.

Almost a minute later, Jasmine Dickey would drain a jump shot to tie the game at seven with 4:04 left in the first quarter. Towson’s Ryann Evans would make her own jump shot to put the Tigers back in the lead by two (9-7) with 3:36 remaining in the first period. The Blue Hens would quickly answer back with Ty Battle rolling in a layup to tie the game at nine with 3:16 left in the first quarter.

Starting at the 1:36 minute mark, the Tigers would outscore the Hens 8-4 to end the first quarter with a four-point lead (17-13).

Hens lead by two points at the end of the first half

Delaware started off the second quarter by scoring five straight points to give the team an 18-17 lead with 8:46 left in the first half. Senior guard/forward Makayla Pippin scored three of the five points.

Seconds later, Towson would start on a 14-5 run, which gave them an eight-point lead (31-23) with 5:23 remaining in the second quarter.

Starting at the 4:33 minute mark, the Blue Hens came charging back as Jasmine Dickey scored six straight points to cut the lead to two points (31-29) with 3:37 left in the first half.

As the minutes slipped away in the first half, each team would score five points to keep Towson’s lead at two points ( 36-34). Dickey scored three of the five points during that time for the Hens.

Towson leads by two points after three-quarters of play

Just like the two previous quarters, the University of Delaware came out fast in the third period as the team went on a 10-4 run to take a 44-40 lead with 5:38 left in the third quarter. Four of the ten points on the run came from the free-throw line. The defense of the Hens also stepped up during this run as they had four defensive rebounds, one block, and one steal.

Seconds later, the Tigers would outscore the Blue Hens 9-6 to trim the lead to one point (50-49) with 2:22 remaining in the third quarter.

Fifteen seconds later, Delaware would rumble off four straight points to push their lead back up to five points (54-49) with 1:49 left in the third quarter.

Starting at the 1:30 minute mark, the Tigers would answer back by scoring seven straight points to grab a 56-54 lead to end the third quarter.

Blue Hens win 81-78!

In the fourth quarter, the intensity of the game went up to another level as the two teams exchanged the lead six times, and tied the score four times in the first five minutes of the final quarter. The last bucket during those five minutes was Delaware’s senior guard Paris McBride hitting two free throw shots to give her team a 71-69 lead with 5:01 left in the game.

Starting at the 3:38 minute mark, the Tigers would get on a little roll as the team scored five straight points to take a three-point lead (74-71) with 3:07 left in the game.

How would the Blue Hens respond? Tyi Skinner would hit back-to-back buckets to give her team a 75-74 lead with 39 seconds left in the game. The Hens defense also was a factor in the run as they swiped two steals.

Towson was not done just yet as Aleah Nelson hit a jump shot to give her team a 76-75 lead with 25 seconds left in the game.

Nine seconds later, the Blue Hens would answer back with a 6-1 run, which would seal hard fought 81-78 win over the Tigers. Four of the six points on the run came from the free-throw line.
