Tyler Jones last-minute points give Goldey-Beacom 70-66 win over Wilmington University

Goldey-Beacom leads by 12 points after one half of play

The game started with the Lightning striking first as they had buckets from junior forward Juran Ligonde and sophomore forward Mattia Morini to give their team a 5-0 lead with 18:45 left in the first half.

In the next four minutes, Goldey-Beacom would continue to expand their lead as they outscored Wilmington 10-9 to take a 15-9 lead with 14:36 left in the first period. Nazim Derry was the leader of this run as he scored six of the ten points.

Starting at the 14:16 minute mark, Wilmington would claw back into the game by going on a 12-6 run, which tied the game at 21.

Almost two minutes later, Goldey-Beacom would respond by outscoring the Wildcats 24-12 to end the first half with a 45-33 lead. During this run, the Lightning drained five shots from the three-point line, which came from Derry, Morini, freshman forward Kevon Ferguson, Tyler Jones, and freshman guard Cardin Joubert.

Lightning win 70-66!

Wilmington would start the second half off fast as the team buzzed off on an 18-8 run to cut the lead to two points (53-51) with 13:48 left in the game.

In the next four minutes and 33 seconds, the Wildcats would continue to pounce as the team outscored Goldey-Beacom 6-3 to take a 57-56 lead with 9:15 remaining in the game.

The Lightning would answer back by draining back-to-back baskets, which gave them a 60-57 lead with 7:04 left in the second half.

Fast Forward to the 3:56 minute mark, Wilmington would tie the game at 61, but seconds later, Kevon Ferguson and sophomore guard Mekhi Collins would hit back-to-back layups to give Goldey-Beacom a 65-61 lead.

The Lightning lead did not last long as Wilmington’s Danny Walsh scored five straight points to give his team a 66-65 advantage with 2:05 left in the game.

Then as the seconds ticked down, Tyler Jones would make two free throws and drain a three-pointer to seal a hard-fought 70-66 win for Goldey-Beacom over the Wildcats.
