DSU explodes in the second quarter putting 42 points on the board
In the first quarter, the scoreboard was quiet as neither team could punch it for a score.
Delaware State’s two drives in the first quarter ended with a turnover on downs and a punt.
In the second quarter, the Hornets would end the silence on the scoreboard and begin their barrage of points in the quarter.
The first touchdown of the game came at the 14:55 minute mark, when Delaware State marched 53 yards down the field in seven plays, which ended with their running back Sy’veon Wilkerson scoring a seven-yard rushing touchdown.
Wilkerson was the workhorse on that scoring drive as he rushed for 46 yards during that time.
The next Delaware State scoring drive started at the 12:40 minute mark, where the team wasted no time putting it in the endzone in a two-play, 39-yard drive. Hornets running back Michael Chris-Ike would be the one to find the endzone this time as he ran three yards for the score. Chris-Ike’s score would extend Del State’s lead to 14-0 with 12 minutes left in the first half.

At the 12-minute mark, the Virginia University of Lynchburg would start their next drive, and it did not go so good as the DSU defense netted five negative rushing yards, two sacks, and one forced fumble. Defensive back Jawain Granger had both sacks on the drive and forced the fumble, which was recovered by defensive lineman Carrington Jones at the Dragons’ 22-yard line.
The Hornets’ defense set their offense up with great field position, which they did not waste as the team went 22 yards on three plays for Wilkerson to punch it in for an eight-yard touchdown run. Wilkerson’s touchdown would expand Delaware State’s lead to 21-0 with 8:30 left in the first half.
The freshman running back ran for all of Del State’s 22 yards on the touchdown drive.

The DSU offense once again used the short field to their advantage as the team marched 21 yards in four plays to see their quarterback Jared Lewis run the ball in for a one-yard touchdown. Lewis’s touchdown extended his team’s lead to 28-0 with 5:50 left in the first half.
Michael Chris-Ike did most of the work on this drive as he rushed for a total of 22 yards.
Delaware State’s next scoring drive would start at the 5:04 minute mark at their own 48-yard line. Gross’s touchdown would put his team’s lead at 35-0 with 3:01 left in the second quarter.
Running back Chris-Ike was also a big part of this drive as he rushed for a total of 25 yards on four carries.
At the 16-second mark, DSU would find time for one last score before the end of the first half as quarterback Jared Lewis found wide receiver Bizzett Woodley for a 41-yard touchdown to expand the score to 42-0.
Hornets score seven more points in the third quarter
Virginia Lynchburg would get the ball first in the second half, but their drive did not last long as Delaware State’s Jawain Granger would intercept Darrius Sample’s pass at the 50-yard line.
The DSU offense would once again turn the Dragons’ turnover into points to extend their huge lead. The Hornets went 50 yards in seven plays to have running back Wade Inge score a 15-yard rushing touchdown to put the lead at 49-0 with 10:24 left in the third quarter.
The Dragons’ first touchdown of the game would come at the 1:30 minute mark in the third quarter, when quarterback Darrius Sample found his wide receiver Joshua Gray for the 59-yard touchdown reception. Virginia Lynchburg’s kicker would miss the extra point, which had the score at 49-6.
