Walsh & Farrior Score 22 As WilmU Clinches Spot In CACC Tournament In 80-77 Win Vs USciences

The Wilmington University men’s basketball team clinched their spot in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tournament on Tuesday when the team defeated the University of the Sciences Devils 80-77 at the WU Athletics Complex. This is the third straight season WilmU has made an appearance in the tournament.

The leading scorers of the game for Wilmington were redshirt sophomore guard Danny Walsh and senior guard Thomas Farrior who each scored 22 points in the win.

Redshirt junior guard Jermaine Head also scored in double digits in the Wildcats’ win with 21 points.

WilmU had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included Assists (17-15), Steals (9-4), and Points in The Paint (28-24).

Wilmington also won the turnover battle in the game by 10-14.

Wildcats also had the advantage in shooting as well, as the team shot 50.0% (34-68) and the Devils shot 41.2% (28-68).

Farrior, Walsh & Head Combine For 34 Points To Give WilmU A Halftime Lead

The leading scorers for the Wildcats in the first half were Danny Walsh and Jermaine Head who each scored 12 points. Walsh and Head’s teammate, Thomas Farrior was right behind them in scoring 10 points in the first half.

As a team, Wilmington found a lot of good shots in the first half as they shot 54.3% (19-35).

USciences shot 41.2% (14-34) in the first half and they also shot 100% (5-5) at the foul line.

The Devils out rebounded the Wildcats 21-12 in the first half.

Wilmington won the turnover battle in the first half over USciences by 4-9.

The game started with Wilmington jumping out to a quick 11-3 lead which the team hit three 3-pointers in a row on the run.

Then around the 8:12 minute mark, the Devils would go on a 13-4 run which would tie the game up at 31 with 4:51 left in the half.

The Wildcats would go on a 9-4 run around the 3:59 minute mark to end the half with a 43-37 lead.

First Half Stats

Wilmington shot 54.3% (19-35) in the first half and the Devils  shot 41.2% (14-34) .

WilmU shot 0% (0-0) at the foul line in the first half and USciences shot 100% (5-5) .

Wildcats leading scorers in the first half were Danny Walsh and Jermaine Head with 12 points.

Devils leading scorer in the first half was Brandon Starr with 12 points.

Farrior & Walsh Combine For 22 Points As Wilmington Hangs On For The Win

The leading scorer in the second half for the Wildcats was Thomas Farrior who scored 12 points. Farrior’s teammate, Danny Walsh was right behind him scoring 10 points in the half.

As a team, the shots did not come as easy in the first half as WilmU shot 45.5% (15-33) in the second half. Wilmington also shot 66.7% (2-3) at the foul line in the second half.

The Devils, shot the same shooting percentage in the second half as they did in the first with a 41.2% shooting percentage (14-34).

USciences held the advantage in rebounds (21-14) and won the turnover battle in the second half ( 5-6).

The second half started with the Wildcats going on a 10-4 run which increased their lead to 53-41 with 17:53 left in the game.

Wilmington’s double-digit lead would dwindle down to single digits in the later minutes of the game as with 1:58 left the Devils would trail by two with a 76-74 score.

WilmU would outscore the Devils 4-3 for the rest of the quarter to hang on to win 80-77 when the final buzzer sounded.

Wilmington heads on the road to take on Chestnut Hill on February 23rd at 3:00pm ET.
