The game tied at seven after one-quarter of play
Delaware’s defense would make a big play in the early minutes of the first quarter when Kedrick Whitehead forced Rhode Island wide receiver Jamall Mensah to fumble the ball. Whitehead would pick the ball up, and the Blue Hens would have the ball at the Rams 43 yard line.
The Hens took the ball over at Rhode Island’s 43 yard line and would have little movement until the team went for it on fourth down. it was fourth and two at the Rams 35 yard line, when running back Dejoun Lee ran for 35 yards to score the first touchdown of the game.
At the 5:29 minute mark in the first quarter, Rhode Island would march down the field for 67 yards in seven plays to tie the game at seven.
The touchdown came when the Rams quarterback Brandon Robinson rushed for 13 yards for the score with 2:41 left in the first quarter.
Blue Hens add another touchdown in the second quarter
Delaware’s next scoring drive started their own 36-yard line with 10:06 left on the clock in the second quarter. The Blue Hens would march down the field for 64 yards in 12 plays for Anthony Paoletti to rush it in for a one-yard touchdown. Paoletti’s touchdown would give the Hens a 14-7 lead with 3:51 left in the first half.
The rushing attack had a major impact on this drive as the team rushed for 42 yards.
The Blue Hens defense would force the Rams to punt twice in the second quarter as the team would take a 14-7 lead into halftime.
Henderson throws two touchdowns in the third quarter
Delaware did not waste any time finding the end zone in the early minutes of the second half as the team marched 79 yards on ten plays for Nolan Henderson to find Bryce De Maille for a 22-yard receiving touchdown. De Maille’s touchdown would give the Hens a 21-7 lead with 9:21 left in the third quarter.
The rushing attack once again played a big part in a scoring drive as the team rushed for 52 yards.
About seven minutes later, the Blue Hens find the end zone once again by marching down 77 yards on ten plays for Henderson to find Thyrick Pitts for the four-yard touchdown. Pitts touchdown would push the Hens lead to 28-7 with 1:56 left in the third quarter.
The other highlight play on the scoring drive was Henderson finding Pitts for a 37-yard catch to set Delaware up at the Rams 28 yard line.
Less than two minutes remained in the third quarter when Rhode Island set up shop at their own 25-yard line. The Rams would march 75 yards in five plays for Brandon Robinson to get a one-yard rushing touchdown. Robinson’s touchdown would cut the Hens lead to 28-14 at the end of the third quarter.
Hens win by 14
Delaware next scoring drive would start at their own eight yard line with 10:48 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Blue Hens would march 92 yards in six plays for Dejoun Lee to run 74 yards for the touchdown to give his team a 35-14 lead with 7:31 left in the fourth quarter.
Lee ran for 83 yards on the Hens scoring drive.
The last score of the game would come from the Rams as their quarterback Kasim Hill found Jamall Mensah for a five-yard touchdown which cut the lead to 35-21 with 3:08 left in the fourth quarter.
Delaware’s offense would run out the clock on the next drive to seal a 35-21 win over Rhode Island.
