CAA QUARTERFINALS: Blue Hens big fourth quarter pushes them past UNCW

All tied up after one-quarter of play

In the first five and half minutes into the game, Delaware would hold control of the lead with a score of 6-2 with 4:50 left in the first quarter. The leader of this run was Ty Battle, who would score four of the six points. The defensive play of the Hens came out strong on this run as the team had two steals, one block, and three defensive rebounds.

Seconds later, UNCW would go on a 7-3 run, which would tie the game at nine with 2:36 left in the first quarter.

The Blue Hens would respond by scoring four unanswered points, which gave the team a 13-9 lead with 1:12 left in the first quarter. Tyi Skinner would lead this mini-run as she scored three of the four points.

The Seahawks would score four straight points as well, which would tie the score at 13 at the end of the first quarter.

Blue Hens would lead by one point at the end of the first half

In the early minutes of the second quarter, Delaware would march out on a 17-8 run, which gave the team a 30-21 lead with 3:51 left in the first half. The leader of this run was Jewel Smalls, who scored 11 of the 17 points. Smalls was on fire from the three-point shot on the run as she made three.

Rebounding was also a key on the run as the team collected six rebounds.

About a minute later, UNCW would score eight straight points, which would cut the lead to one point (30-29) at the end of the first half.

Hens lead by three after three-quarters of play

The second half started with the Seahawks jumping out to an 11-4 run which gave the team a 40-34 lead with 5:39 left in the third quarter.

Thirty seconds later, the Blue Hens would answer back with a 10-4 run of their own, which tied the score at 44 with 2:28 left in the third quarter. Five of the Hens’ ten points on the run came from the free-throw line.

In the remaining minutes of the third quarter, Delaware would outscore UNCW 5-2 to give them a 49-46 lead. Senior guard Tee Johnson would be the leader of this run as she scored three of the five points.

Delaware wins by 18

The Blue Hens came out in the fourth quarter with all the cylinders rolling as the team went on a 17-3 run to take a 66-49 lead with 2:48 left in the game. The duo of Jewel Smalls and Jasmine Dickey would score 12 of the 17 points on the run. Smalls made back-to-back three-point shots on the run.

The Seahawks had five turnovers during Delaware’s 17-3 run. The Hens defense had five defensive rebounds, two blocks, and six steals during the run.

The Hens would score four more points in the fourth quarter to wrap up a 70-52 win and secure a ticket to the CAA semifinals.
