Hens Lee starts the game off with a bang!
The game started with the Black Bears winning the coin toss and deferring to Delaware to receive the ball first.
The Blue Hens did not waste any time getting points on the board, as running back Dejoun Lee received the kickoff at the Hens 13-yard line and ran it back for 87 yards for a touchdown. Lee’s kickoff return touchdown would give Delaware a 7-0 lead with 14:47 left in the first quarter. This was the first season-opening kickoff return for a touchdown for the program since 1933.
After the quick score, the scoreboard would be silent for the rest of the first quarter.
Delaware scores 10 points in the second quarter
The Blue Hens opened up the second quarter with eight plays, 30 yards, 4:22 minute scoring drive. Sophomore kicker Ryan Coe would make a 38-yard field goal at the 10:45 minute mark.
The key player on this scoring drive was Delaware quarterback Nolan Henderson who had 25 passing yards. The junior quarterback found Dejoun Lee and redshirt junior Thyrick Pitts each for a 12-yard play.
The Hens next scoring drive started at the 8:25 minute mark at their own 25-yard line. Delaware would march 75 yards for the score, which ended with Henderson finding wide receiver Gene Coleman II for the 21 yard receiving touchdown. Coleman’s touchdown would push the Blue Hens lead to 17-0 with 5:42 remaining in the first half.
Other than the scoring play, another highlight on the scoring drive came when wide receiver Jourdan Townsend rushed for 37 yards which took the team to Maine’s 38-yard line.
Blue Hens would add ten more points to their lead in the third
In the third quarter, it would be Ryan Coe adding three more points (20-0) to the Hens lead as he made a 45-yard field goal with 11:02 on the clock.
A key play on this drive was a 14 yard run from Dejoun Lee, which set his team up at the Black Bears’ 26-yard line.
Delaware would start on its first touchdown drive of the second half at the 10:14 minute mark. The Blue Hens would drive 48 yards which ended with Lee rushing 12 yards for the score. Lee’s touchdown would give the Hens a 27-0 lead with 5:14 left in the third quarter.
Besides the scoring play, the other highlight play on the scoring drive was Nolan Henderson finding redshirt senior wide receiver Dillon Zimmerman for 13 yards which took the team to Maine’s 23-yard line.
Hens cruise to a 37 point win!
The next Blue Hens score came in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter as Ryan Coe made a 38-yard field goal which extended his team’s lead to 30-0 with 14:51 left in the game.
Khory Spruill was a key player on this drive as he rushed 19 yards.
After a forced fumble, the Hens would start the next scoring drive on the Black Bears’ one-yard line, which Nolan Henderson would run the ball in himself for the one-yard score. Henderson’s rushing touchdown would be the last one of the game as Delaware won 37-0 over Maine.
How dominating was the Blue Hens defense? The defense made the Black Bears punt ten times, stopped the team twice on downs, and forced a fumble.
