Spring Football: Guthrie’s pick-six helps Hornets Earn 17-10 win over Howard

Delaware State earns a safety in the first quarter

The game started with the Hornets winning the coin toss and deferring, which set Howard upon an opening drive. The Bison’s drive would start at their six-yard line, which on the first two plays, the team marched ten yards down the field. That would be the only positive plays on the drive as the Delaware State defense pushed them back 16 yards in their end zone for a safety.

At the 12:24 minute mark in the first quarter, DSU would have a 2-0 lead over Howard.

Howard takes the lead in the second quarter

The next score of the game would come in the second quarter when the Bison made a 38-yard field goal attempt with 7:02 left in the first half.

Howard started at the own 27-yard line on this drive and had two big plays help them push down the field.

The first one was their quarterback Quinton Williams found his tight end, Malik Hyatt, for 29 yards which pushed them to their 49-yard line.

The second one was a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against the Hornets, which pushed the Bison in DSU territory.

DSU scores 15 in the fourth quarter to seal the win

The first offensive touchdown for the Hornets would not come until the 9:38 minute mark in the fourth quarter.

Delaware State scoring drive started on Howard’s 41-yard line and quarterback Jared Lewis was the key player on this drive.

Lewis rushed for 20 yards and threw for 10 yards on the drive.

Lewis would score the Hornets’ first offensive touchdown of the season as he ran the ball in from the Bison’s two-yard line.

After Lewis’s rushing touchdown, DSU would go for two and convert, which gave the team a 10-3 lead with 9:38 left in the game.
