The Wilmington University women’s basketball team defeated the Chestnut Hill College Griffins 77-67 on Tuesday at the WU Athletics Complex.
The leading scorer for the Wildcats in the game was graduate student guard LaShyra Williams who had 19 points.
Three other Wilmington players scored in double digits and they were junior forward Jadyn Whitsitt (11), sophomore forward Emily Ansah (12) and junior center Sabreen Muslim (16).
WilmU had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included points off turnovers (13-11), second-chance points (16-4), points in the paint (48-18), bench points (28-15), rebounds (43-34), steals (10-4) and turnovers (9-18).
Wilmington also had the advantage of shooting as well, with the team shooting 44.1%( 30-68) and with Chestnut Hill shooting 41.0%(25-61).
Wildcats Lead By 11 After One Quarter
The leading scorers for Wilmington in the first quarter were redshirt junior Kasha Andrews, sophomore guard Kiara Eubanks, and LaShyra Williams who each scored four points.
As a team, the Wildcats shot 38.9% (7-18) in the first quarter and they also shot 100.0% (4-4) at the free-throw line.
The Griffins worst shooting quarter of the game was in the first where the team shot 27.3% (3-11). Chestnut Hill also shot 20.0% (1-5) at the three-point line in the first quarter.
The game started with the Wildcats roaring out to a quick 6-0 lead which would later balloon into a 12-5 lead with 3:55 left in the quarter.
Starting at the 3:25 minute mark, Wilmington would outscore Chestnut Hill 6-2 to push their lead to 18-7 going into the second quarter.
Wilmington Takes A 18 Point Lead Into The Half
The leading scorers for Wilmington in the second quarter were LaShyra Williams, Emily Ansah and Sabreen Muslim who each scored six points.
Wilmington had their best shooting percentage of the game in the second as the team shot 55.0% (11-20). The Wildcats also shot 0% (0-4) at the three-point line in the second quarter.
Chestnut Hill shot 35.3% (6-17) in the second quarter and the team also shot 37.5% (3-8) at the three-point line.
At the 9:01 minute mark, Wilmington would outscore the Griffins 16-11 which would push their lead to 34-19 with 2:19 left in the half. During that run, Wilmington had two blocks, four offensive rebounds, and five defensive rebounds.
The Wildcats would outscore the Griffins 6-3 for the rest of the quarter to take a 40-22 lead into the half.
Griffins Trim Wildcats Lead To 10 In the Third Quarter
The leading scorer for Wilmington in the third quarter was Sabreen Muslim who scored five points. The Wildcats were not as sharp shooting the ball in the third quarter as they were in the second as the team shot 46.7% (7-15). Wilmington also shot 50.0% (2-4) at the free-throw line in the third quarter.
Chestnut Hill shot 37.5% (6-16) in the third quarter and they also shot 100.0% (4-4) at the free-throw line.
At the 6:32 minute mark, Wilmington would start a 12-2 run which was led by Sabreen Muslim who scored five of the 12 points. The 12-2 run would extend the Wildcats lead to 52-31 with 3:12 left in the third quarter.
The Griffins would outscore the Wildcats 9-4 for the rest of the quarter to decrease Wilmington’s lead to 56-40.
Free Throws Help Wilmington Seal Win
The leading scorer for Wilmington in the fourth quarter was LaShyra Williams who had seven points.
The Wildcats had their worst shooting percentage of the game in the fourth quarter as they shot 33.3% (5-15). Wilmington also shot 76.9% (10-13) from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
The Griffins had their best shooting percentage in the fourth quarter as the team shot 58.8% (10-17). Chestnut Hill also shot 70.0% (7-10) at the three-point line in the fourth quarter.
Wilmington started the fourth quarter with an 11-3 run which the team had three offensive rebounds and one defensive rebound in that time. The run gave the Wildcats a 67-43 lead with 6:24 left in the game.
Starting at the 2:39 minute mark, Wilmington would hit six free throws to seal a 77-67 win against the Griffins.
