Hornets Earn First Win Of The Season With 67-41 Win

The Delaware State University women’s basketball team earned their first win of the season on Saturday when they defeated Post University Eagles 67-41 at Memorial Hall.

The leading scorer of the game for the Hornets was junior guard Miajah Bullock who scored 15 points.

Two other Hornets scored in double digits which they were senior guard Lanayjha Ashe (13) and junior guard/forward Sharajah Collins (10).

Junior forward Zoe Holmes was a rebounding machine in the win with 10 rebounds in the game.

Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included assists (14-4) and turnovers (13-21).

The Hornets bested the Eagles in shooting percentage as DSU had a 46.2% (24-52) and Post had a 25.9% (14-54) percentage.

The Eagles Jump Out To A Quick Lead In First Period

Delaware State started out slow in the first period as in the first six minutes of the game, the team only scored four points.

Post did not start off slow at all, the Eagles jumped out to a quick 12-4 with lead with five minutes left in the first period.

The Hornets would go on an 8-1 run to tie the game up at 12 with 53 seconds left in the first period.

The tie did not last for long as Post’s Jaeonna Sutton hit a layup right before the period ended to give her team a 14-12 lead.

Post Ends With Halftime Lead

The Division II Post was giving the Division I Delaware State everything they could handle as the Hornets would get close to the lead in the second period but could not gain the lead.

DSU would go into halftime trailing Post 24-21.

First Half Stats

Hornets were shooting  33.3% (8-24) in the first half and Post was shooting 33.3%( 9-27).

Delaware State was shooting 71.4% (5-7 ) from the free-throw line in the first half and the Eagles 50 %(3-6).

DSU Outscores Post By 14 In Third Period

The Hornets came out in the second half a completely different team from the first half, as the team had a pep in their step in the third period.

Around the 6:08 minute mark, DSU would go on a 16-0 run which would give the team a 43-28 lead with 3:03 left in the period. The run was led by Miajah Bullock who scored eight out of the 16 points on the drive.

The Hornets would end the third period with a 43-32 lead.

Hornets Outscore Post By 15 To Seal Win

The Hornets kept their fire a-blazing in the fourth period as the team went on a 22-5 run which gave them a 64-37 lead with 2:05 left in the game.

When the buzzer sounded Delaware State ended with a 67-41 win over Post.

Delaware State travels to the Bob Carpenter Center to take on Delaware Blue Hens on Tuesday, November 12th at 7 PM ET.
