The University of Delaware Blue Hens made the Colonial Athletic Association quarterfinal an interesting game as team was down 14 points at halftime and made a second half comeback to win 89-75 over the College of William & Mary Tribe at North Charleston Coliseum.
The leading scorer of the game for the Blue Hens was freshman guard Ithiel Horton who scored 26 points.
Redshirt senior forward Eric Carter recorded a double-double in the game with scoring 13 points and collecting 10 rebounds.
Two other Blue Hens scored in double digits and they were sophomore guard Ryan Allen (23) and sophomore guard Kevin Anderson (15).
Delaware had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included Rebounds (29-28), Second Chance Points (8-7) and Fast Break Points (5-4).
Blue Hens also had the advantage at three point line as well, with the team shooting 58.3 % (14-24) and with the Tribe shooting 36.0 %( 9-25).
Horton Scores 10 But Hens Trail At The Half
The leading scorer for the Blue Hens in the first half was Ithiel Horton who scored 10 points. As a team, Delaware shot 50% (13-26) in the first half and they also shot 44.4 % (4-9) at three point line.
William & Mary found most of the shots they were looking for in the first half as the team shot 69.2 % (18-26). The Tribe also shot 44.4 % (4-9) at three point line in the first half.
The first half started with the Tribe quickly collecting a 9-3 lead which were signs of things to come in the half.
William & Mary were up by nine at the 8:39 minute mark, the Tribe would push that lead further as the team went on a 11-4 run to increase their lead to 31-17 with 5:32 left in the half.
At the 1:39 minute mark, The Tribe were at again as they went on a 5-0 run to increase their lead to 45-29 with 1:09 left in the half.
Eric Carter would hit a lay up near the end of the half to decrease William & Mary’s lead at the half to 45-31.
First Half Stats
Blue Hens were shooting 50% (13-26) in the first half and William & Mary was shooting 69.2 % (18-26) .
Delaware was shooting 44.4 % (4-9) from downtown and the Tribe 44.4 % (4-9) .
Blue Hens leading scorer in the first half was Ithiel Horton who scored 10 points.
Tribe’s leading scorer in the first half was Justin Pierce who scored 16 points.
Allen & Horton Combine For 37 Points In 2nd Half As Blue Hens Mount A Comeback to Win
The leading scorer for the Blue Hens in the second half was Ryan Allen who had 21 points. Allen’s teammate, Ithiel Horton was right behind him with scoring 16 points in the second half. They both went four out five from three point line in the second half for the Hens.
As a team, Delaware’s shooting improved in the second half as they shot 55.2 % (16-29). The Hens also shot 66.7 % (10-15) at three point line in the second half and 75.0 % (12-16) at the foul line.
The Tribe’s magic of shooting in first half wore off in the second as the team shot 30.8 % (8-26). William & Mary also shot 76.5 % (13-17) at the foul line in the second half.
The second half started with Hens going on a 9-4 run which decreased the Tribe’s lead to 49-40 with 17:21 left in the game.
At the 10:18 minute mark, The Blue Hens went on a 27-7 run which gave them their first lead in the second half with a 79-71 score with 3:05 left in the game.
The Tribe outscored the Hens 8-7 for the rest of the half but it did not matter as the final buzzer sounded it was Delaware heading to semifinals with 85-79 win.
Delaware takes on Hofstra on March 11th at 6:00pm ET in the CAA Semifinals.
