The Delaware State Baseball team avoided being swept by the University of Maryland – Baltimore County Retrievers with a 6-5 win on Sunday at Blandair Park.
The RBIs in the game for the Hornets came from junior third baseman Jared Gillis (3), senior left fielder Todd Henry (1),redshirt sophomore right fielder Mark Herron (1)and sophomore catcher Alex Vasquez (1).
The runs in the game for Delaware State came from senior right fielder Adrian Hill (2), Gillis (2),sophomore first baseman Tripp Kimmell (1) and Henry (1).
Seven Hornets had a hit in the win and they were Hill (1), sophomore shortstop John Weglarz (2), Gillis (1),Kimmell (1), Henry (1),Herron (1) and Vasquez (1).
Todd Henry recorded a stolen base in DSU’s win.
Jared Gillis hit a home run in the 6-5 win against UMBC.
On the pitching side, DSU’s freshman pitcher Jeremy Carrow went five innings, six hits, five runs, three earned runs and five strike outs.
In 93 pitches, 61 of Carrow’s pitches were strikes in the win.
Freshman pitcher Robert Shorts came into relieve Carrow and he went four innings, one hit,three walks,six strikeouts and earned the win.
In 62 pitches, 33 of Shorts pitches were strikes in the win.
DSU Strikes First With Four in First Inning
The Hornets did not waste any time with getting on the scoreboard as the team scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning.
The first runs of the game came from Jared Gillis who hit a home run to left field which scored Adrian Hill and himself to give DSU a 2-0 lead.
The next run of the inning for the Hornets came from Mark Herron who hit a single to the right side which scored Tripp Kimmell to increase their team’s lead to 3-0.
The last run of inning for DSU came from Alex Vasquez who grounded out to third base but that would allow Todd Henry to score to increase their team’s lead to 4-0.
Both Teams Add Runs In The Second Inning
Delaware State would add one more run to their lead in the second inning when Jared Gillis grounded out to first base which allowed Adrian Hill to score to increase their team’s lead to 5-0.
The Retrievers hitters would end their silence in the bottom of the second inning when the team put two runs on the scoreboard.
The first run came from UMBC’s Colin Casey who grounded out to second base which allowed Raven Beeman to score. Beeman’s score would decrease DSU’s lead to 5-1.
The second run of the inning for the Retrievers came from Andres Machado who grounded out to the shortstop which allowed Blaze O’Saben to score. O’Saben’s score would decrease DSU’s lead to 5-2.
UMBC Adds Another Run In Third Inning & Two In The Fifth
The Retrievers would pull even closer to the Hornets lead as they would add a combined three runs in third and fifth innings.
In the bottom of third inning, UMBC’s Raven Beeman reached first base by a throwing error from DSU’s third baseman but that would allow Christian Torres to score. Torres score would narrow the Hornets lead to 5-3.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Retrievers would add two more runs as the team tied the game up at five.
The first run for UMBC came from AJ Wright who doubled to center field which scored Terrence Pinkston to decrease Hornets lead to 5-4.
The tying run of the game came from UMBC’s Joey Goodwin who flied out to center field on a sacrifice fly which scored Wright.
DSU’s starting pitcher Jeremy Carrow would exit after this inning as he went five innings, six hits, five runs, three earned runs and five strike outs.
Hornets Add One In Seventh & Hold On For The Win
The winning run of the game came in the top of the seventh inning as Todd Henry would hit a double to right center field which allowed Jared Gillis to score to give DSU a 6-5 lead.
Robert Shorts came into relieve Carrow and he was dominant as he threw four scorless innings to seal the Hornets 6-5 win.
Shorts went four innings, one hit,three walks,six strikeouts and earned the win.
DSU starts a two game home stand as the take on LIU Brooklyn on March 12th at 3:00pm ET.
