The Wilmington University softball team had quite the regular season this year going 35-15 which is a program best. The squad also won a record 21 games in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference to secure the number two seed in the upcoming CACC tournament.
The dominant play by the team led to five players earning All-CACC Softball honors that was announced on Tuesday by the CACC.
Wilmington freshman Makayla McCarthy was named CACC Pitcher of the Year and also named to the First Team All CACC for her dominating season on the mound. Sophomore Rosa’Lynn Burton, Junior Caitlyn Whiteside and Sophomore Annie Davila all earned First Team All-CACC Softball honors with McCarthy. Also, freshman Lauren Lopez earned Second Team All-CACC Softball honors for the season.
Makayla McCarthy: CACC Pitcher of the Year & First Team All CACC
McCarthy was a force on the mound this season with a 16-8 record, 1.70 ERA ( 2nd in the CACC) and 191 strikeouts ( 1st in CACC) in 29 games. In two games this year, McCarthy had a season high of 14 strikeouts which was against Chestnut Hill and Post. The freshman pitcher had seven games with 10 or more strikeouts in the regular season. McCarthy also had 21 complete games and five shutouts on the season.
The WilmU pitcher is not only good on the mound but McCarthy can hit as well. McCarthy finished the regular season with .355 batting average, 43 hits, 13 doubles ( led team) , a triple, and four home runs. The California native was second on the team with 27 RBIs on the season.
This offensive production earned McCarthy another CACC honor which was First Team All-CACC Utility-Pitcher.
Caitlyn Whiteside: First Team All-CACC
Whiteside is no stranger to first team honors as she was named to the All CACC team last year. Whiteside alongside McCarthy helped shape a dominant pitching duo for Wilmington this season.
The junior had a record of 18-7 ( 1st in CACC), 2.60 ERA ( 4th in CACC) and 72 strikeouts in 28 games. Whiteside also had three shutouts and 21 complete games this season.
Rosa’Lynn Burton:First Team All-CACC
Just like Whiteside, Burton is no stranger of earning CACC honors which the speedy outfielder has now earned back to back First Team All-CACC honors.
For the season, Burton had .465 batting average ( 2nd in CACC) , 39 stolen bases ( 1st in CACC), 80 hits ( 1st in CACC), 49 runs scored ( 1st in CACC), six triples( 2nd in CACC) , 113 total bases,( 2nd in CACC) and a .518 on-base percentage( 2nd in CACC). Burton ended the regular season on fire with a 17 game hitting streak.
Annie Davila:First Team All-CACC
Davila earned her First Team All CACC honor as a utility player with starting 18 games behind the plate and 17 as the designated player. On the season, Davila had .311 batting average, 32 hits, five doubles, four home runs and 27 RBIs ( tied second on team).
Lauren Lopez: Second Team All-CACC
On the season, Lopez had .286 batting average, 42 hits, eight doubles, a triple, two home runs and 12 sacrifice bunts ( 1st in CACC).
