Wilmington’s Men’s Soccer Settle For A 1-1 Tie Vs Millersville in Home Opener

Wilmington University’s Men’s Soccer team opened the season at home Thursday with a 1-1 tie in 2 OTs vs Millersville.

Wildcats WU Athletic Complex is hosting the Wildcat invitational and Wilmington’s game was the second game of the day.

This is the ninth meeting between the two teams and the Wildcats had won the past four out five meetings.

It was a slow start for Wilmington who only got off 3 shots in the first half, compared to Millersville who had 4 shots and one goal.

Millersville got on the board first at the 41st mark with Kody Eberly going up for a penalty kick and beating Vinny Tasca to left for the goal.

Tasca was definitely the star of the game for Wilmington who had 10 saves in the game and 3 in first half.

In the second half, Wildcats came out with more energy with out-shooting Millersville 7-5 and they finally scored their first goal of the season at the 79th minute of the game.

The goal came courtesy of reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Year  Lorne Bickley who got a nice assist from Sophomore midfielder Dimitrios Topouzlis to get Millersville goalie Darian McCauley in a bad spot and scored Wilmu’s first goal.

After that neither team scored which led to 2 overtimes but neither team could get a goal and the game ended in a tie.

Millersville outshot Wilmington by 1 which was 12-11 but Wildcats had more corner kicks than Millersville with 10-8.

If it was not for goalie Vinny Tasca who made 2 crucial saves in the second overtime, Wildcats might have been looking at a loss instead of a tie to start the season.

Both teams return to play at Wildcat Invitational on Saturday at the WU Athletic Complex for the final day of the competition. Wilmington will face University of the District of Columbia for their final competitor in the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday at 4:30pm.
