Goldey-Beacom Survives Georgian Court 88-87 Behind Powell, Jones, and Williams in CACC Quarterfinals

The  Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team escaped with an 88-87  Atlantic Collegiate Conference quarterfinals win on Tuesday over the Georgian Court University Lions. The Lightning will play the Dominican (NY) Chargers on Saturday in the CACC semifinals.

Sophomore guard Tre Powell led Goldey-Beacom in scoring in the win with 33 points.

Junior guard/forward Emarquis Jones recorded a double-double in the game with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Junior forward Julian Williams also scored in double-digits in the victory, recording 12 points.

The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included second-chance points (25-12), fast-break (9-8), and rebounds (43-27).

Lightning was also the better team at the three-point line in this game, as the team shot 40.0%(10-25), and the Lions shot 34.5%(10-29).

The Lightning led by one at the end of the first half.

Goldey-Beacom came out of the gates strong in this matchup, jumping out to a 16-7 edge with 14:18 remaining in the opening period. Emarquis Jones and Tre Powell led the charge by scoring 13 of the 16 points.

Fast forward to the 9:57 minute mark, Powell would knock in a layup to extend GBC’s advantage to 11 points (25-14).

Georgian Court clawed its way back into the game, as the team went on a 21-9 run to grab a 35-34 lead with 4:04 left in the first half.

Three minutes later, the Lions pushed their edge to five points (43-38) with Cam Edmonds knocking down a three-pointer.

The Lighting ended the opening half by scoring six straight points and taking a 44-43 advantage into halftime.  Sophomore guard Brian Blanchet scored five of the six points on that run.

Goldey-Beacom takes home an 88-87 win!

Georgian Court came out in the early minutes of the second half with a new pep in their step, as they scored seven straight points to take a 50-44 lead with 18:07 remaining in the game.

Almost six minutes later, the Lions’ edge grew to nine (64-55) after hitting two shots from the free-throw line.

Goldey stormed back by outscoring Georgian Court 24-10 to grab a 79-74 advantage with 5:13 left in the game. Emarquis Jones, Tre Powell, and Julian Williams confused the Lions defenders during this time, scoring all 24 of GBC’s points.

Fast forward to the 3:11 minute mark, where Powell would put the Lightning up seven (83-76) when he sank a layup.

The Lions roared right back as they went on a 9-2 run, which ended with a Donavin Crawford three-pointer to tie the game at 85 with 44 seconds left in the fourth.

Williams would seal the deal for the Lightning and send them to the semifinals with a layup and then a free throw shot with seconds left to give his team an 88-87 victory.
