Wilmington University Splits Sunday Doubleheader, Walks Off Against Sioux Falls

The Wilmington University softball team earned a win on Sunday, with a 4-3 win in the first game versus the Sioux Falls Cougars, and lost 8-0 against Seton Hill in the second match.

Game Recap:

Wilmington University trails by three runs at the end of the first inning.

Sioux Falls took advantage of the Wildcats mistakes early and cashed into runs, as a fielding error by the right fielder in the top of the first inning allowed two baserunners to go home to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

USF would add another run in the top half of the first inning with an RBI single to extend the edge 3-0.

WilmU comes back and takes home a 4-3 win!

After three innings of silence on the scoreboard, Wilmington would up in the bottom of the fourth, when freshman infielder/catcher Mia Lane knocked a RBI double down the left line to reduce the deficit to 3-1.

The fifth inning started a little dicey as the first batter walked, and the next two would strike out swinging.

Graduate student outfielder Gabriella Saucedo changed the momentum to the Cats’ side in the fifth, with a two-out RBI single down the right field line to cut the score to 3-2.

Sophomore pitcher/ outfielder Maddie Vollmar would be next up to the plate and would reach first base by a throwing error from the Sioux Falls third baseman. That error also allowed Saucedo to score to tie the game at three.

Seven innings weren’t enough for this game, as it went to extras and the WilmU found a way to pull off the win.

Vollmar came up big in the bottom of the eighth, where she blasted a walk-off RBI single to right field to give her team a 4-3 win.

Pitching Recap:

The Cats used three pitchers in this game, which included sophomore Kasey Xenidis, who went six innings, gave up one hit, one walk, struck out four, and earned the victory.
