Wilmington University earns a split versus Dominican (N.Y.)

The Wilmington University baseball team earned a split versus the Dominic (N.Y.) University Chargers on Tuesday with a 16-7 loss in Game One, and a 10-7 win in the second match.

Game Recap:

Wilmington University trails by one run at the end of the first inning.

Dominican (N.Y.) would light up the scoreboard right away in this one, as the team scored two runs on three hits and one error to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

WilmU would cut into the Chargers’ lead in the bottom of the inning when senior catcher Jack McDonald smacked an RBI single to right field to take the score to 2-1.

WilmU takes a three-run lead at the end of the third inning.

The Wildcats would take over the lead in the bottom of the third inning, as the team scored four runs on four hits to take a 5-2 advantage.

Freshman outfielder Brandon Grygo started the scoring in the inning, as he hit an RBI single to second base to tie the game at two.

On the next play, Grygo would advance to second on a passed ball, and freshman infielder Garrett Quinn would score on that to give their team a 3-2 lead.

Three batters later, sophomore designated hitter Mason DeLuca smacked a RBI single to center field to push the Wildcats edge to 4-2.

On the next play, DeLuca would be caught stealing second, but Jack McDonald would be able to score during that time to extend their team’s lead to 5-2.

Dominican (N.Y.) ties the game up at five at the end of the fourth inning.

After the Wildcats’ big inning, the Chargers answered back with one of their own, as the team scored three runs on two hits and one error to tie the game at five.

The Wildcats would take home a 10-7 win!

Dominican (N.Y.) would take the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Joseph Torres scored on a fielding error by Wilmington’s center fielder to give his team a 6-5 edge.

WilmU would answer back in the bottom of the fifth by scoring five runs on four hits and two errors to take a 10-6 advantage.

 Jack McDonald started the scoring in the inning as he slapped an RBI single to right field to tie the game at six.

Four plays later, McDonald would score a throwing error by the Chargers third baseman to give his team a 7-6 lead.

Freshman first baseman Chase Fleming stepped up to the plate next as he smacked a two-run single through the left side to push the Cats edge to 9-6.

Fleming would score a wild pitch four plays later to take the score to 10-6.

Dominican (N.Y.) would add another run in the top of the seventh inning, but WilmU hung on to take home a 10-7 victory.

Pitching Recap:

Sophomore starting pitcher Scott Borgmann went three innings, gave up five hits, five runs, two earned runs, two walks, and struck one batter.

The bullpen consisted of three relievers, who combined to give up five hits, two runs, one earned run, and struck out five batters.

Senior pitcher Anthony Giordano went 2.1 innings, gave up three hits, two runs, and one earned run, struck out three batters, and earned the win.

Freshman pitcher Xavier Cortez closed out the game, as he went 0.2 innings, struck out two batters, and earned the save.
