Henderson’s six touchdowns power Blue Hens to a 49-17 win over Monmouth

Blue Hens lead by 11 after one quarter of play.

The game started with Monmouth getting possession of the ball first on their own 25-yard line. The Hawks shredded Delaware’s defense on their first series as they drove 75 yards in two plays to end with running back Jaden Shirden blasting off for the 69-yard score to give his team a 7-0 lead with 14:16 left in the first quarter.

Delaware would not waste any time answering back to the Hawks’ score, as the team started their first drive of the game at their own 35-yard line. The Blue Hens would march 65 yards in nine plays to end, with quarterback Nolan Henderson finding wide receiver Thyrick Pitts for the 13-yard touchdown to tie the game at seven with 11:04 remaining in the first quarter.

After Monmouth’s second drive would stall out in three plays with a total of three yards gained, it would be the University of Delaware’s turn, and the offense did not miss the chance to take the lead for the first time in this game.

Delaware’s offense would start their second series at their own 39-yard line with 9:09 left in the first quarter. The Blue Hens would drive 61 yards in three plays to end with quarterback Nolan Henderson hitting Jourdan Townsend for the 49-yard touchdown reception, giving their team a 14-7 advantage with 8:24 remaining in the first quarter.

The Hawks would respond with a scoring drive of their own, as the team went 71 yards in 11 plays to end with a 21-yard made field goal from Eric Bernstein to cut the lead to 14-10 with 2:50 left in the opening quarter.

It would be a three-and-out for the University of Delaware on their next series. Still, the offense would get another chance as Monmouth would fumble the ball on the punt, and Hens linebacker Johnny Buchanan would recover it at his opposition’s eight-yard line.

The Blue Hens’ offense would not waste the short field that was given to them, as the team marched eight yards in three plays to end with Henderson throwing his third touchdown of the day to wide receiver Chandler Harvin to push their team’s advantage to 21-10.

Delaware leads by 32 at the end of the first half.

The Hawks’ defense would have a hard time stopping the Blue Hens’ offense in the second quarter, as the team would pour 21 straight points on the scoreboard.

Delaware’s first scoring drive of the second quarter came at the 12:08-minute mark, where the team would set up shop at their own 20-yard line. UD would drive 80 yards in eight plays to end, with quarterback Nolan Henderson taking the ball to the endzone by himself for a two-yard score to expand his team’s lead to 28-10 with 5:34 left in the first half.

One of the highlights of this scoring drive came on a first and 15 at Monmouth’s 37-yard line when Henderson found senior wide receiver Brett Buckman for the 24-yard reception to put the team at their opposition’s 13-yard line.

The University of Delaware’s offense was too much for the Hawks’ defense, as the team would start on another touchdown drive at the 3:39 minute mark in the second quarter. Delaware would push the ball 81 yards down the field in four plays to end, with running back Kyron Cumby dashing off on a 34-yard touchdown run to extend the team’s advantage to 35-10 with 2:28 remaining in the second quarter.

Other than the scoring play, the highlight of the scoring drive was when Henderson found the wide receiver, Chandler Harvin, for a 21-yard gain to set the team up at Monmouth’s 43-yard line.

Fast forward to the 1:35 minute mark, where the Hens would start at their own 34-yard line. Delaware would drive 66 yards in seven plays to end with wide receiver Thyrick Pitts catching his second touchdown of the first half, which would push the team’s advantage to 32 points (42-10).

Quarterback Nolan Henderson was almost perfect on the scoring drive, as he completed four of his five passes for 57 yards.

Delaware’s defense sharpened up in the second quarter as they only allowed 50 yards, sacked the quarterback twice, forced the Hawks to punt twice, and turned the ball over on downs.

Blue Hens lead by 39 at the end of the third quarter.

The second half would start with UD getting the possession of the ball first at their own 25-yard line. Delaware’s offense would march 75 yards in six plays to end with quarterback Nolan Henderson hitting running back Marcus Yarns for the 23-yard touchdown catch to push the lead to 49-10 with 12:39 in the third quarter.

Henderson would continue his hot streak as he completed four of his five passes for 67 yards on this drive.

The University of Delaware’s defense would do the rest in the third quarter, forcing the Hawks to the ball over downs twice.

The Hens win 49-17!

Monmouth would have the last score of the game as it came on their drive at the 10:22 minute mark in the fourth quarter. The Hawks would drive 78 yards in 12 plays to end, with running back Juwon Farri taking it 20 yards for the touchdown to cut the Blue Hens’ advantage to 49-17.

All there was left for Delaware to do was run down the clock and seal a dominating 49-17 win!
