Nolan Henderson lights up Rhode Island defense in Blue Hens 42-21 win

Blue Hens lead by seven points at the end of the first quarter.

The game would start with the University of Delaware getting possession of the ball first, with the team starting at their own 21-yard line. The Hens’ first drive would last for nine plays, with the team moving the ball 38 yards down the field, but junior running back Marcus Yarns would get stuffed for a two-yard loss on fourth and one on the Rams’ 39-yard line.

Delaware’s next offensive drive would start at the 9:03 minute mark at their own 14-yard line. On this possession, the Hens would march 86 yards on seven plays to end the series, with quarterback Nolan Henderson finding tight end Branden Brose for the 21-yard receiving touchdown to give their team a 7-0 lead with 6:34 left in the first quarter.

Other than the touchdown pass, one of the highlights of the drive came when Henderson threw a deep pass to Graduate student tight end Bryce De Maille for 17 yards to set up the Blue Hens their own 33-yard line.

Right after this pass, running back Kyron Cumby also had a highlight play of his own with him bursting out on a 25-yard scamper to put the Hens at the Rams’ 42-yard line.

The action in the second started with the University of Delaware marching 99 yards on eight plays to end the drive with quarterback Nolan Henderson finding Jourdan Townsend for the 65-yard touchdown to expand their lead to 14-0 with 14:46 to play in the quarter.

After the Delaware score, Rhode Island would take possession of the ball at their own 43-yard line, and the team was driving as they marched 44 yards in five plays to their opponent’s nine-yard line.

Then a little bad luck set in for the Rams as they would get sent 15 yards backward by a block below the waist penalty, but that is not the worst thing that happened on the drive. Two plays later, Rhode Island’s quarterback Kasim Hill would get intercepted by Blue Hens defensive back Kedrick Whitehead who would take the ball to his own 20-yard line.

After an Unsportsmanlike penalty, the Blue Hens offense would set up shop at their own ten-yard line, but even this long field did not stop the team from getting back in the endzone.

UD would march 80 yards on nine plays on this drive to end with quarterback Anthony Paoletti rushing nine yards for the score to give his team a 21-0 advantage with 6:12 left in the first half.

The Hens offense was firing on all cylinders at this point, as on their next drive, the team would march 75 on eight plays to end with quarterback Henderson finding wide receiver Thyrick Pitts for the eight-yard touchdown to give the team a 28-0 lead with 1:58 left in the second quarter.

The rushing attack played a key part in the drive as the group collected 42 yards during that time.

Fast forward to Rhode Island’s drive on a second and ten at their own 35-yard line, running back Gabe Sloat would find some space and then hit it full gear as he rushed for a 65-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 28-7 with 1:35 left in the first half.

The Blue Hens would respond quickly to the Rams’ score, as the team went 75 yards in five plays to end with Henderson hitting Jourdan Townsend for a four-yard touchdown to expand the lead to 35-7 at the end of the first half.

Thyrick Pitts had the hot hands on this drive as he had four catches for 47 yards.

Hens lead by 21 at the end of the third quarter.

The only points that were scored in the third quarter would happen on the Rams’ second drive, where the team would march 33 yards in four plays to end with quarterback Kasim Hill finding target Kahtero Summers for a 19-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 35-14.

Delaware for the first time in the game, would struggle in the third quarter, with three of the four drives stalling and either having to punt the ball away or giving it up on downs.
