Delaware leads by 11 points after one half of play.
The game would start with the Hornets receiving the ball first at their own 30-yard line, and the offense was humming right of the gate as the team went 33 yards in nine plays to set up a made field goal at the Blue Hens 37-yard line to take a 3-0 lead.
One of the highlights of DSU’s scoring drive was when their quarterback Jared Lewis found his running back Wade Inge for 18 yards to move the chains to Hens’ 39-yard line.
After the University of Delaware offense struggled to get anything going in their first drive of the game, it was a prime opportunity for Delaware State to capitalize and add to their lead.
The opposite happened, as DSU would be stagnant on offense, and the team would have to punt on the drive. On the fourth and five down, Delaware’s sixth-year defensive back Trey Austin would swing the momentum of the game back on his team’s side as he blocked the punt, and then senior running back Quincy Watson recovered it for a touchdown to give the Hens a 7-3 advantage with 5:39 left in the first quarter.
Starting at the 3:58 minute mark, the Hens would march 70 yards on 12 plays to end the drive, with quarterback Nolan Henderson finding wide receiver Thyrick Pitts for the 18-yard touchdown to give their team a 14-3 lead with 14:53 left in the second quarter.
Pitts was a hot target on the scoring drive as he racked up 28 receiving yards.
The running game was also a factor on the Blue Hens’ drive as they rushed for 25 yards. Henderson had the longest run during that time with nine yards.
Two drives later, on a third and 12 on their own 32-yard line, Delaware’s Henderson would throw a long pass to his right that would be intercepted by the Hornets’ Jayden Estes at the DSU 50-yard line.
Despite the good field position, DSU could not take advantage of the interception and would punt after three plays.
The Blue Hens defense would hold the Hornets’ offense to a missed field goal attempt and a punt in their last two possessions of the first half.
Hens hold a 25-point lead after three-quarters of play.
The action in the third quarter started with DSU’s first drive of the second half, where they marched from their own 30-yard line to Delaware’s 49-yard line in eight plays. All the momentum on the drive was deflated as the team’s running back Wade Inge would cough up the ball with a hit from Blue Hens defensive back Noah Plack. After the ball popped loose, defensive back Kedrick Whitehead would recover the ball and take 42 yards to the Hornets ‘ 11-yard line.
Delaware would not waste the short field they were given by their defense as the team went 11 yards in four plays to end the drive, with quarterback Nolan Henderson finding tight end Braden Brose for a seven-yard touchdown to expand their team’s lead to 21-3 with 4:01 left in the third quarter.
Two drives later, on a second and five on their own 18, the University of Delaware’s running back Marcus Yarns would benefit from good blocking and showed off his speed as he ran for 82 yards for a touchdown to extend his team’s lead to 28-3 at the end of the third quarter.
Blue Hens win 35-9!
The fourth quarter would start with the Hornets marching 78 yards down the field on five plays to end with quarterback Jared Lewis finding wide receiver Raheem Smith for a 57-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 28-9 with 14:14 left in the game.
Five drives later, the Delaware offense would put the game way out of reach as the team went 49 yards on three plays to end with quarterback Nolan Henderson finding Braden Brose for his second touchdown of the day. Brose’s 27-yard touchdown would seal a 35-9 win over their Route One Rival.
