Wilmington University defeats Bloomfield and Caldwell on Day 1 of the CACC Tournament

Wilmington trails by two runs after five innings of play

In the first four innings of this game, the pitchers would have control as they shut down the opposing team’s lineup to keep the scoreboard at zero.

In the fifth inning, that would change, as Wilmington’s starting pitcher Renamarie Rocha would give up two solo home runs, which would have her team trailing 2-0 in the game.

After giving up the two home runs, Rocha would exit, as Kylee Gunkel would come in for her as she would get the last two outs of the fifth inning.

WilmU would score four runs in the sixth inning

The bottom of the sixth inning would be a game-changer for the Wildcats as the team pushed in four runs to take a 4-2 lead.

Emma Zimmerman would push in the first run of the game for WilmU, as she would reach first base on a throwing error, but that would allow Danielle Hess to score to trim the lead to 2-1. Three plays later, Sara Miller would ground out to the shortstop, but it allowed Gabbie Saucedo to score to tie the game at two.

Arianna Millan would be the next batter up as she hit an RBI single to give the Wildcats a 3-2 advantage. On the next play, Isabella Eleazar would also hit an RBI single to extend WilmU’s lead to 4-2.

Wilmington wins 4-3!

Caldwell was not ready to wave the white flag just yet, as the team scored one run in the seventh inning to tighten the Cats’ lead to 4-3.

After giving up the run in the top of the seventh inning, Wilmington’s Kylee Gunkel day would be over, and Renamarie Rocha would get the last out to seal the 4-3 win.
