Rivera’s 4 RBIs helps Delaware State earn 8-3 win over Norfolk State

Delaware State leads by four runs after two innings

The first action on the bases in this game came in the top of the first inning when Miguel Rivera reached first base by earning a walk. Sophomore shortstop, Trey Paige would be the next batter up as he hit a triple to left-center field, which allowed Rivera to score to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead.

Delaware State’s bats would continue to spark in the second inning, as the team had three hits and pushed in three runs.

Jordan King would get the action on the bases started in the second inning by hitting a single through the left side of the field. He then would advance to second base on a passed ball. Robert Trujillo would step up to the plate next, as he reached base by earning a walk. Mike Worthington would be the next batter up, as he hit a single through the right side of the field, which allowed King to score to give DSU a 2-0 lead. On the next play, Worthington would steal second base.

Rivera would step up to the plate, as he would hit a triple to right-center field, which would allow Trujillo and Worthington to go home to extend Hornets’ lead to 4-0.

Hornets take an 8-3 lead after five innings

After getting silenced by the Hornets’ starting pitcher Peter Carrea for two innings, Norfolk State would finally get on the board in the bottom of the third inning when third baseman Tommy Woods hit a solo home run down the left line to cut the lead to 4-1.

Delaware State would answer back in the top of the fourth inning, with Miguel Rivera hitting a two-out RBI single through the left side of the field to extend his team’s lead to 5-1.

DSU’s lineup would have another big inning in the top of the fifth as the team had two hits and pushed in three more runs.

The inning started with sophomore designated hitter Brady Daniels, and Jordan King each earning a trip to the bases with a walk. Robert Trujillo would be the next batter up, as he hit a single through the left side, which would allow Daniels to score to expand Delaware State’s lead to 6-1.

Two batters later, Rivera would double to right field, which would send home King to give their team a 7-1 advantage. The next batter, Trey Paige, would get intentionally walked. On the next play, Paige would advance to second base on a passed ball, which would allow Trujillo to score to extend the Hornets’ lead to 8-1.

Delaware State wins 8-3!

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Spartans would trim the lead to six runs when catcher Dominic Joseph would score on a dropped fly ball by DSU’s Miguel Rivera.

Fast forward to the bottom of the eighth inning, where Norfolk State would cut the lead to five runs when second baseman Raphy Rodriguez hit a solo home down the right-field line.

The Hornets starting pitcher Peter Carrea would get back to his dominant form in the ninth inning as he would seal the 8-3 win by getting two groundouts and a batter to fly out.
