Delaware State leads by two runs after two innings
The game started with DSU’s Jonah Cunnigan earning a trip to first base with a walk. On the next play, Cunnigan would steal second base.
Three batters later, Courtney Kohel would hit a two-out single to left field, which would send Cunnigan home to give her team a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning, the Hornets would continue to use their speed on the bases to put them in the best positions to score.
Kyla Johnson would lead the top of the second inning off for Delaware State, as she would reach first base by getting hit by a pitch. Yanique Spencer would be the next batter up, as she hit a single up the middle, which advanced Johnson to second base.
Two plays later, Kyla Johnson would be on third, and she would do the rare act of stealing home base to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead.
DSU trails by one run after six innings
After getting shutout for three innings by Delaware State’s starting pitcher Sydney Hoffman, the Coppin State bats would find some life in the fourth inning. The team made good use of their one hit in the inning, as they turned it into a run.
The first run of the game for the Eagles came when Shawnee Ronyak hit a two-out RBI triple to right-center field, which would trim the lead to 2-1.
In the fifth inning, Coppin State would continue the scoring as the team would add another run to their total to tie the game at two.
The run in the top of the fifth inning came from Alexis Genovese as she had an RBI sacrifice bunt to even the score at two.
DSU’s Hoffman would exit the game after giving up a single and a walk in the sixth inning, she would end the day by giving up four hits, three runs, two earned runs, and four walks.
Emma Glawson would come into the game to relieve Hoffman, as she went gave up two hits in the inning, which included an RBI single from the Eagles Makayla Caballero to give them a 3-2 lead.
Delaware State wins 5-4!
Delaware State’s lineup went four innings without putting a run-up, but that would all change in the seventh inning, as the team would score three runs to take a 5-3 lead. The team had four hits in the top of the seventh inning.
The first run of the seventh inning came when Yanique Spencer would hit an RBI double to right-center field to tie the game at three.
Dallas Speicher-Ramirez would be the next batter up, as she hit an RBI double to left-center field, which gave the Hornets a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh.
The last run of the seventh inning would come when Jonah Cunnigan would fly out to the center field, which allowed Speicher-Ramirez to score to extend DSU’s lead to 5-3.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Coppin State would tack on one run, but Delaware State would hang on to win 5-4.
