Wilmington scores a combined seven runs in the third and fourth innings
Saturday’s game would start out with two scoreless innings, as neither lineup could get anything going against the opposing pitcher.
In the third inning, that would all change as Wilmington would score the first run of the game in the top of the inning.
WilmU’s score came when Gabbie Saucedo would reach first base on a dropped fly ball by Goldey’s center fielder, which would allow Tristyn Stewart to score from first base to give their team a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats’ lineup came back in the top of the fourth inning, chomping for more runs as the team pushed in six to take a 7-0 lead.
The bases were loaded as Emma Zimmerman came up to the plate, as she would reach base on a fielder’s choice, but senior first baseman Kiersten Comer would score on a throwing error from the Lightning’s third baseman to extend Wilmington’s lead to 2-0.
Two batters later, Courtney Dellinger would reach base on a fielder’s choice, which allowed Sara Miller to score to give their team a 3-0 lead.
The next batter up would be Stewart, who would hit a two-RBI single to expand WilmU’s lead to 5-0.
Goldey-Beacom’s mistakes helped Wilmington score their last two runs of the fourth inning as Stewart scored on a throwing error, and Dellinger scored on a wild pitch to give their team a 7-0 advantage.
WilmU wins 10-1!
The Wildcats were not done adding to their lead as the team scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to give them a 10-0 lead.
There were two baserunners and two outs when Danielle Hess hit a two-RBI triple to right-center field, which gave Wilmington a 9-0 lead.
The last run of the top of the fifth inning came when Courtney Dellinger reached a base on a fielder’s choice, which allowed Hess to score to give their team a 10-0 advantage.
After throwing four scoreless innings, Wildcats starting pitcher Kylee Gunkel just needed one more to seal an outstanding day on the mound. Gunkel would allow one run, one hit, one walk in the bottom of the fifth inning, but would get three final outs to seal the 10-1 win.
We looked at the first game 10-1 win. Now let’s talk about game two’s 16-5 win.
