Matthews & Walsh combine for 48 points in Wilmington’s 97-92 win over Goldey-Beacom

Wilmington leads by 11 at the end of the first half

Wilmington started this game by darting off to a 6-2 advantage with 17:25 left in the first half. Danny Walsh and Caleb Matthews each drained a three-point shot in the 6-2 run.

Four minutes and 16 seconds later, Goldey-Beacom’s Juran Ligonde would hit a three-pointer to tie the game up at 16 with 13:09 remaining in the first half.

Starting at the 12:40 minute mark, the Wildcats would outscore the Lightning 24-16 to take a 40-32 lead with 2:28 left in the first half. The trio of Randy Rickards, Caleb Matthews, and sophomore guard Taalib Holloman scored 17 of the 24 points during that time. Rebounding was also a factor during that stretch, as the team collected ten rebounds.

As the minutes slipped by in the first half, Wilmington would add more of a cushion to their lead by outscoring Goldey-Beacom 8-5 to take a 48-37 lead.

Wildcats win 97-92!

Goldey-Beacom came out in the second looking like a different team from the first half as they went on a 17-4 run to take a 54-52 lead with 13:15 left in the game.

Wilmington would respond by scoring seven straight points to take back the lead with a 59-54 advantage with 11:35 remaining in the game. Freshman Jordan Jackson and Caleb Matthews scored all seven points on the run.

Starting at the 11:03 minute mark, the Wildcats would continue to push their lead further as the team outscored the Lightning 11-7 to hold a 70-61 advantage. Matthews would score six of the 11 points for WilmU. All six of his points came from the three-point line.

Seconds later, Goldey-Beacom would start to catch fire as the team outscored Wilmington 22-14 to pull the lead within one point (84-83) with 2:52 left in the game.

Twenty-seven seconds later, the Wildcats would go on a 6-3 run to take a 90-86 lead with 27 seconds remaining in the game.

Nine seconds later, the Lightning would punch back with a 6-3 run too, which would trim the lead to one point (93-92) with seven seconds left in the game.

As the seconds ticked down, Wilmington would make four free-throw shots to seal a 97-92 win over Goldey-Beacom.
