All tied up at seven after one-quarter of play
The game started with Delaware State stalling out of their opening 35-yard drive on a 4th and 6th on Howard’s 35-yard line.
After Howard’s offense took the reins, the team marched 66 yards in six plays for Antoine Murray to catch a 37-yard touchdown pass from his quarterback Quinto Williams. Murray’s receiving touchdown gave the Bison a 7-0 lead with 7:55 left in the first quarter.
On Delaware State’s next drive, the team went 60 yards in two plays for wide receiver Trey Gross to catch a 59-yard touchdown pass from his quarterback Jared Lewis. Gross’s receiving touchdown would tie the game at seven with 6:55 left in the first quarter.
The Hornets’ defense would keep Howard’s offense quiet as the team forced Bison to punt on their next two drives.
DSU leads by ten at the end of the first half
On Delaware State’s first drive of the second quarter, the team went 56 yards in three plays for Bizzet Woodley to catch a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jared Lewis. Woodley’s receiving touchdown gave the Hornets a 13-7 lead ( missed the extra point) with 12:20 left in the first half.
Other than the touchdown, another highlight play on the drive came when Lewis found senior wide receiver Kwannah Kollie for a 37-yard reception to set up the team at Howard’s 19-yard line.
The Bison would respond quickly after DSU’s touchdown, as the team marched 70 yards in 12 plays for a 22 yard made field goal to cut the lead to 13-10 with 6:31 left in the second quarter.
At the 3:31 minute mark, the Hornets would start their drive at their own 12-yard line, but the team would go 88 yards on 14 plays for Jerrish Halsey to catch a 35-yard touchdown from Lewis to give their team a 20-10 lead with six seconds left in the first half.
Lewis threw for 69 yards on this scoring drive.
Howard creeps closer to Delaware State’s lead in the third quarter
The only score in the third quarter came from the Bison, who went 81 yards in 10 plays in the middle of the third quarter to cut the lead to three points (20-17). Howard’s quarterback Quinto Williams was the man who earned the touchdown as he rushed for a three-yard score.
Hornets hang on to win 30-23!
After an excellent 75-yard kickoff return by Jerrish Halsey and Howard penalty, DSU would start their drive at the Bisons’ 12-yard line. The Hornets did not waste that short field as the freshman kicker Matt Noll would make a 25-yard field goal attempt to extend his team’s lead to 23-17 with 14:57 left in the fourth quarter.
At the 14:57 minute mark, Howard would start on the next drive as the team went 75 yards for four plays for Ian Wheeler to rush 60 yards for a game-tying touchdown ( the extra point was blocked ).
The momentum had swung in the Bisons’ direction, but that Hornets offense still had more gas left in the tank. Delaware State went 62 yards in nine plays for Trey Gross to catch a 14-yard touchdown pass from Jared Lewis to give their team a 30-23 lead with 8:22 left in the game.
The Hornets’ defense would come up big as they would be able to force Howard’s offense to punt on their next two drives to close out the 30-23 win.
