Blue Hens continue to roll with 74-55 victory over Elon

Hens down two after one-quarter of play

The game started with the Hens rolling out to a 7-3 lead with 7:06 left in the first quarter, which was due to their rebounding as the team collected six rebounds on the run. Delaware’s defensive play was strong on the run as well, with the team having three steals and three defensive rebounds.

Starting at the 6:32 minute mark, Elon would start to make up ground by going on a 9-2 run, which gave the team a 12-9 lead with 4:48 left in the first quarter.

In the last four minutes of the first quarter, the Hens would outscore the Phoenix 6-5 to cut the lead two points (17-15).

Eight of Delaware’s 15 points came from the paint in the first quarter.

Blue Hens up six at the half

The Hens opened up the second quarter with a 5-0 run, which was thanks to a three-point shot from junior guard Jewel Smalls and a layup by senior forward Lizzie O’Leary. The 5-0 run gave the Blue Hens a 20-17 lead with 8:29 left in the first half.

About a minute later, Elon would tie the game at 20 with a three-point shot from Jaylin Powell, which was followed up with a good jumper to give them a 22-20 lead with 7:09 left in the first half.

At the 6:26 minute mark, Delaware would start on a 14-5 run, which gave them a six-point lead (34-28) at the end of the first half. The leader of this run was Chyna Latimer, who scored 10 of the 14 points. Latimer made two shots from the three-point line during the 14-5 run.

Delaware leads by 23 after three-quarters of play

The Blue Hens would continue to sizzle in the second half as the team went on a 14-2 run, which extended their lead to 48-30 with 5:05 left in the third quarter. The leader of this run was Jasmine Dickey, who scored nine of the 14 points. Rebounding was also a key on this run as the Hens collected seven rebounds.

Delaware was not done adding to their lead as a minute later, the team would go on a 10-5 run to end the quarter with a dominating 58-35 lead. Once again, Dickey would be the leader of the run with scoring eight of 10 points. Dickey made two shots from the three-point line in the 10-5 run.

Twelve of the Blue Hens’ 24 points in the third quarter came from the paint.

Hens win by 19 points

The Phoenix would try to make up some ground in this game as the team went on a 5-0 run to start the final quarter, which cut the lead to 58-40 with 8:44 left in regulation.

In the next three minutes, Delaware responded by outscoring Elon 10-7, which pushed their lead to 68-47 with 5:33 left in the game.

Tyi Skinner would come up big for the Blue Hens in the last five minutes of the game as she scored four of their six last points. The Hens would cruise to a 74-55 victory over the Phoenix.
