Wilmington Sweeps Chestnut Hill With 11-3 & 8-0 Wins

The Wilmington University softball team has now won four straight games as team the swept the Chestnut Hill College Griffins 11-3 and 8-0 in a Thursday afternoon double header.

The offense was out in force in the doubleheader as the Wildcats scored a combined 19 runs in the two games.

 

 

Game 1 ( 11-3 Win Vs Griffins)

As runs batted in goes ( RBI), five Wildcats had them and they were junior left fielder Rosa’Lynn Burton (1), redshirt junior center fielder Kiana Broderson-Jones (3), sophomore third baseman Lauren Lopez (2), junior catcher Annie Davila (1) and sophomore pitcher Makayla McCarthy (1).

Eight Wildcats scored runs in the game and they were Burton (2), Broderson-Jones  (1), junior shortstop Alyssa Velasquez (1), Lopez (2),Davila (1), McCarthy (1),junior right fielder Courtney Dellinger (2) and senior second baseman Jazmeen Llamas (1).

Eight Wilmington players had a hit in the game and they were Burton (2),Broderson-Jones  (2),Velasquez (1), Lopez (1), Davila (1), McCarthy (2), Dellinger (1) and Llamas (1).

Rosa’Lynn Burton (1) and Kiana Broderson-Jones (2) each recorded a stolen base in the win.

On the pitching side, senior pitcher Caitlyn Whiteside had a solid game as she went six innings,six hits,three runs,two earned runs, five strikeouts and earned the win (13-6 on the season).

In 100 pitches, Whiteside threw 69 strikes in the 11-3 win against Chestnut Hill.

 

Wilmington Scores Seven Runs In First Two Innings

In the first inning, both teams did not waste any time putting runs on the scoreboard as it was tied at one run each after that inning.

In the top of the first inning, Chestnut Hill was able to land the first run on the board when Ariel Magee reached the first base on a fielding error from Wilmington’s shortstop which allowed Lily Winn to score.

Wilmington answered back in the bottom of the first inning, as Lauren Lopez flied out to left field in a sacrifice fly which allowed Rosa’Lynn Burton to score.

In the second inning, Wilmington’s starting pitcher Caitlyn Whiteside did her thing as she quieted the Griffins bats with them putting zero runs on the board.

It might of been a quiet inning for Chestnut Hill but it was a different story for Wilmington as the team knocked in six runs in the bottom of second inning.

Wilmington’s first run in the bottom of the second came from Burton as she hit a single to left field which scored Makayla McCarthy to give their team a 2-1 lead.

The next batter up was Kiana Broderson-Jones who singled up the middle which scored Jazmeen Llamas and Courtney Dellinger to extend Wilmington’s lead to 4-1.

After the next Wilmington batter grounded out, it was Lopez’s turn as she reached first base by a dropped fly ball which allowed Broderson-Jones and Burton to score to give their team a 6-1 lead.

The seventh run of the game for the Wildcats came from Annie Davila who hit a double down the right center of the field which allowed Lopez to score to extend Wilmington’s lead to 7-1.

 

The Two Teams Combine For Three Runs In the Third Inning

The Griffins were not throwing in the towel just yet as the team muster up two runs in the top of third inning.

Chestnut Hill’s first run of the inning came from Alessandra Messina who hit a triple to right field which scored Lily Winn to decrease Wilmington’s lead to 7-2.

Griffins next score came from Kaya Swanek who reached first base on a fielding error by Wilmington’s shortstop which allowed Messina to score. Messina’s score cut Wildcats lead to 7-3 in the middle of the third.

The Wildcats answered back in the bottom of third with a run of their own as Kiana Broderson-Jones singled to right field which scored Courtney Dellinger to extend their team’s lead to 8-3.

Wilmington Adds Three Runs In the Sixth Inning 

Wilmington’s starting pitcher Caitlyn Whiteside shut down Chestnut Hill for next three  innings as she ended her day in the sixth inning. Whiteside went  six innings,six hits,three runs,two earned runs, five strikeouts and earned the win.

The Wilmington hitters were not done yet as in the bottom of the sixth inning, the team added three more runs to their already dominant lead.

The first run of the inning came from Lauren Lopez who doubled down the third base line which scored Alyssa Velasquez to give their team a 9-3 lead.

The next batter was Annie Davila who reached first base on a fielding error from Griffins third baseman which allowed Lopez to score to extend Wilmington’s lead to 10-3.

The last run of the game came from Makayla McCarthy who hit a double to center field which scored Davila to seal the 11-3 win over the Griffins.

The Wildcats hit the road for two games to meet up with Concordia (N.Y.) on April 6th at 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM ET.

 

Game Two ( 8-0 Win Vs Griffins)

Five Wildcats scored runs in the game and they were Rosa’Lynn Burton (2), Kiana Broderson-Jones (2), Alyssa Velasquez (1), freshman first baseman Kiersten Comer (1) and Dellinger (2).

Six Wilmington players had a hit in the game and they were Burton (2), Davila (1), Velasquez (1), Comer (1), Dellinger (1) and Sann (2).

Rosa’Lynn Burton (2), Annie Davila (1), Alyssa Velasquez (1) and Courtney Dellinger (1) each recorded a stolen base in the win.

On the pitching side,Makayla McCarthy pitched a dominant three innings as she had two walks, five strikeouts and earned the win ( 7-3 on the season).

In 52 pitches, McCarthy threw 27 strikes in the win.

Game one starter,Caitlyn Whiteside also came in for two innings as she gave up two hits in the win.

In 21 pitches, Whiteside threw 15 strikes in the win.

 

Wilmington Plates Fours Runs In First Two Innings

Chestnut Hill went down quickly and quietly in the first inning but the Wildcats made a lot noise in the bottom of the inning.

In the bottom of the first inning, Wilmington would get the scoring started as Makayla McCarthy reached first base on a dropped fly ball by the Griffins right fielder which allowed Kiana Broderson-Jones and Rosa’Lynn Burton to score to give their team a 2-0 lead.

The Griffins continued to struggle in the hitting department as the team put another zero on the scoreboard in the top of the second.

The Wildcats added two more runs to their lead in the bottom of the second as it started with Lauren Lopez reaching first base on a fielder’s choice which allowed Rosa’Lynn Burton to score to give their team a 3-0 lead.

The next batter would be Annie Davila who would hit a single to the left side of the field which scored Broderson-Jones to extend Wilmington’s lead to 4-0.

The Wildcats starting pitcher Makayla McCarthy would be called after three innings as she had  two walks, five strikeouts and earned the win.

 

Wilmington Adds One In Third & Three In Fifth Inning To Seal Win

Caitlyn Whiteside came in for Makayla McCarthy and continued the dominance as she went two innings and gave up two hits.

As the Griffins hitters continued their cold streak, Wilmington continued to add to their lead.

In the bottom of third inning, Wilmington’s Alexis Sann hit a triple down the left field line which scored Courtney Dellinger to extend their team’s lead to 5-0.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Wilmington would seal the win by scoring three more runs with extending the lead to 8-0.

The first runs of the inning came Dellinger who hit a triple down the first base line which scored Kiersten Comer and Alyssa Velasquez to extend Wildcats lead to 7-0.

The next batter was Sann who hit a single to left field which allowed Dellinger to score which sealed the win with a 8-0 lead.
