Last Second Shot Gets Wilmington First Win Of The Season With 13-12 Victory Vs Mars Hill

The Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team took home their first victory on Monday with a 13-12 win over the Mars Hill University Lions at Meares Stadium.

Wildcats sealed the victory with six seconds left in the game as redshirt sophomore  attacker Delaney Steele hit a free position shot to give her team the win.

Three Wildcats earned a hat trick in the game and they were Steele (4), sophomore defender Maris Allen (3) and freshman defender Brooke Siebert (3).

Along with four goals, Steele had six points, two assists, six shots, five shots at the goal, one ground ball, one draw control and one turnover.

Along with three goals, Allen had four points, one assist, four shots, three shots at the goal,three ground balls,one draw control and three turnovers.

Along with three goals, Siebert had four points, one assist, six shots, five shots at the goal,four ground balls,three  draw controls, four turnovers and one caused turnover.

Two other Wilmington players scored goals in the game and they were sophomore attacker Taylor Lambeth (2) and sophomore attacker  Alexis Miller (1).

Five Wildcats picked up multiple ground balls in the win and they were Lambeth (2), Allen (3), redshirt junior midfielder Lashay Ross (6), Miller (2) and Siebert (4).

Lashay Ross also had 12 draw controls in the Wildcats win.

Freshman goal keeper Tori Grubowski  allowed six goals, 13 shots, had seven saves and earned the win in 30 minutes of play.

Senior goal keeper Maddie Hurm allowed six goals, 10 shots and had four saves in 30 minutes of play.

 

Mars Hill & Wilmington Score A Combined 12 Goals in First Half

There was no lack of scoring in the first half as the two teams combined for 12 goals in the first half alone.

The game started with Wilmington scoring the first goal of the game as  Brooke Siebert was assisted on the goal by Taylor Lambeth to give their team a 1-0 lead with 27:53 in the first period.

About five minutes later, Mars Hill would answer back with a score as Maria Fabrizio was assisted on the goal by Victoria Eckard to tie the game at one with 23:06 left in the half.

A couple minutes later, it was WilmU’s turn to respond as Maddie Hurm  saved a goal  and the team also had a missed shot attempt at the goal. The next play would be Alexis Miller being assisted by Delaney Steele on a goal to give their team a  2-1 lead with 21:06 left in the period.

The Lions quickly responded with a goal from Kiersten Foust to tie the game up at two with 20:25 left in the period.

The Wildcats would pick up a ground ball  from a turnover by Mars Hill which would lead to Maris Allen scoring a goal to give her team a 3-2 lead with 18:36 left in the period.

Around the 15:50 minute mark, Lashay Ross would pick up a ground ball and then Alexis Miller would miss wide of the goal. It would be followed up with Delaney Steele being assisted on a goal from Maris Allen as they increased the Wildcats lead to 4-2.

Delaney Steele would pick up her second goal of the game when she hit a free position shot to increase Wildcats lead to 5-2 with 14:46 left in the half.

Mars Hill would end their silent streak when Molly Tobias was assisted on a goal by Scout Black to decrease Wilmington’s lead to 5-3 with 13:01 left in the first period.

The Lions would score back to back goals as Foust would hit her second goal of the game as she was assisted by Carissa Watson. Foust’s goal would decrease Wildcats lead to 5-4 with 10:42 left in the period.

Mars Hill would tie the game at five with 9:27 left in the period, when Scout Black hit a free position shot.

Wilmington would answer a minute later as Steele would pick up her third goal of the game to give her team a 6-5 lead with 8:34 left in the period.

The Lions would tie the game up at six with 1:33 left in the period, when Molly Tobias would score her second goal of the game on a free position shot.

The first half would end with the two teams tied at six.

 

Siebert & Allen Score Two Goals & Steele Would Hit The Game Winning Goal In 2nd Period

The second period started with Wilmington’s Taylor Lambeth being assisted on a goal by Delaney Steele at the 28:35 minute mark to give their team 7-6 lead.

A couple minutes later, Mars Hill’s Scout Black would hit her second goal of the game to tie the game at seven with 26:19 left in the game.

The Lions would score another goal after that one as Maria Fabrizio would score her second goal of the game as she was assisted by Rebecca Dallman. Fabrizio’s goal would give Mars Hill a 8-7 lead with 24:22 left in the game.

At the 22:46 minute mark, Kiersten Foust would hit her third goal of the game as it was assisted by Maria Fabrizio to increase the Lions lead to 9-7.

Mars Hill would hit their third straight goal when Scout Black scored her third goal of the game on a free position shot to increase her team’s lead to 10-7.

After a turnover from the Lions and Wilmington cleared the ball, it would be followed up by Brooke Siebert scoring her second goal of the game on a free position shot that would decrease the Lions lead to 10-8.

WilmU scored on back to back goals as Maris Allen would hit her second goal of the game as she was assisted by Siebert to decrease Mars Hill lead to 10-9 with 9:03 left in the game.

The Lions would answer back as Molly Tobias would score her third goal of the game in a man up situation on a free position shot. Tobias score would increase Mars Hill lead to 11-9 with 8:53 left in the game.

Wilmington would answer back at 8:03 minute mark, as Lambeth would score her second goal of the game which decreased the Lions lead to 11-10.

Wilmington was not done yet, as Allen would hit her third goal of the game on a free position shot which tied the game at 11 with 7:09 left in the game.

WilmU would hit their third straight goal as Siebert would score her third goal of the game on a free position shot which would give her team a 12-11 lead.

At the 3:54 minute mark, Mars Hill’s Foust would score her fourth goal of the game to tie the game up at 12.

Time was running low but Delaney Steele would hit her fourth goal of the game on a free position with six seconds left to give the Wildcats the 13-12 road win.

Wilmington stays on the road to take on  Newberry on March 6th at 3:30 pm ET.
