After a tough road loss against UNCW last Sunday, the University of Delaware women’s basketball team came back on Friday with a total team effort to get the 71-59 win against the Elon University Phoenix at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The leading scorer of the game for the Hens was junior guard Bailey Kargo who scored 16 points.
Redshirt senior Alison Lewis recorded a double-double in the win as she scored 10 points and collected a career high 11 rebounds in the game. This is Lewis first double-double of her Blue Hen career.
Two other Blue Hens scored in double digits in the win and they were junior forward Samone DeFreese (14) and junior forward Rebecca Lawrence (10).
Delaware had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included Rebounds ( 43-32), Assists (13-11), Steals ( 7-5), Second Chance Points ( 23-2) and Fast Break Points (8-7).
The Blue Hens also won the turnover battle in the game by 14-16.
The Hens also had the advantage over Elon at three point line as the team shot 38.5 % (5-13) and the Phoenix shot 33.3 % (4-12).
Lewis, DeFreese & Lawrence Combine For 12 Pts As Blue Hens Take 1st Period Lead
The leading scorers for the Blue Hens in the first period were Alison Lewis, Samone DeFreese and Rebecca Lawrence who each scored four points each.
As a team, Delaware shot 40.0% ( 8-20) in the first period.
The Phoenix struggled in the first period as the team shot 26.3% (5-19) and they also shot 66.7% (2-3) at the three point line.
The game started with the Hens quickly taking a 10-2 lead which was led by Rebecca Lawrence who scored four points on the run.
Delaware would score two more points after the quick start but Elon would go on a 8-2 run which brought the score to 12-10 with 3:48 left in the first period.
The Blue Hens would outscore the Phoenix 4-2 for the rest of the period to take a 16-12 lead into the second period.
DeFreese, Kargo & Lawrence Combine For 15 Points As Hens Take Halftime Lead
The leading scorer for the Hens in the second period was Samone DeFreese who scored six points. DeFreese’s teammate Bailey Kargo was right behind her with scoring five points in the second period. Rebecca Lawrence also chipped in four points in the second period.
As a team, the Hens found their shots in the second period as the team shot 53.3% (8-15) and they also shot 100% (1-1) at three point line.
Elon also improved their shooting in the second period as the team shot 46.2% (6-13) and they also shot 50% (1-2) at the three point line.
Delaware out rebounded Elon 10-4 in the second period.
The second period started with the Hens going on a 15-2 run which increased their lead to 31-17 with 3:36 left in the half. DeFreese led the charge on the run with scoring six of the 15 points on the run.
The Phoenix would outscore the Hens 11-2 for the rest of period but Delaware would still take a 33-25 lead into the half.
First Half Stats
Delaware had 45.7 %(16-35) shooting percentage in the first half and Elon had 34.4 %(11-32).
Blue Hens shot 25.0 % (1-4) from the three point line in the first half and the Phoenix shot 60.0 % (3-5).
Hens leading scorer in the first half was Rebecca Lawrence with nine points.
Elon leading scorer in the first half was Emily Maupin with 10 points.
Free Throws Play Key Part In Blue Hens Keeping Lead In 3rd Period
The Blue Hens dipped in their shooting some in the third period as they shot 46.7% (7-15). The Hens did take advantage of their time at foul line as they team shot 83.3% (5-6) in the third period. Delaware also shot 50% (2-4) at the three point line in the third period.
Elon shot their best shooting percentage of the game in the third period as they shot 61.5% ( 8-13).
In the first seven minutes of the third period Delaware outscored the Phoenix 15-8 which increased their lead to 48-33 with 3:46 left in the period.
Elon would outscore the Hens 10-6 for the rest of the period but Delaware would still take a 54-33 lead into the fourth period.
Kargo & Lefft Combine For 12 Points As Blue Hens Seal Win
The Blue Hens leading scorers in the fourth period were Bailey Kargo and senior guard/forward Gadson Lefft who each scored six points.
As a team, Delaware shot their worst shooting percentage in the game in the fourth period as they shot 31.3% (5-16). The Hens did continue their strong work at the foul line as the team shot 62.5% (5-8) in the fourth period.
Elon dipped in their shooting some in the fourth period as the team shot 46.2% (6-13). The Phoenix did shoot 80.0% (4-5) at foul line in the fourth period.
The Blue Hens won the turnover battle 2-4 in the fourth period.
In fourth period with about 3:28 left the Blue Hens would outscore Elon 11-7 to end with a 71-59 home win.
Delaware stays at the Bob Carpenter Center to take on William & Mary on March 3rd at 2:00pm ET.
